Re: New member - homeopathic tx questions

Hi! I am a new member here and think I may have been confussed when
making a recent first appointment with a naturopath. I thought he
would do more work with homeopathy as we discussed in a phone
conversation, but he seems to only use it for acute situations... I
took the whole family including hubby, mom, and 2 children and we
spent the afternoon there. The goal in my mind for my children was
to consider future acute treatment with homeopathy via phone consult
as well as to consider the possibility of constitutional treatment
which I have heard / read a little about, but wasn't sure was done
with children. That is my question to the group, but first let me
tell you what issues I was hoping he would address homeopathically
and then maybe someone would be kind enough to tell me if I am
barking up the wrong tree or not. (BTW my journey on this path
started with shows on AutismOne radio listening to Amy Lanskey and
the Ullman's (sp?)).

My 4 year old is just starting to be fully potty trained (PDD
issues) and will poop in the potty after holding it for several days
sometimes. I am trying to understand his motivation for "holding it"
and have come to 3 possibilities: pain (discomfort from holding it
so long it is hard to pass), control (i.e. of body function), and
simply not wanting to "loose" a piece of himself...he can't say why
he won't go, just assumes this hunched-over at the waist, arched-
down back posture that he stays in until the sensation passes and
when I suggest using the potty he'll say "no poo-poo in the potty."
I actually was hopeful that the naturaopath would let us talk, in
detail about this...because mom (grandma to him )and I both had
issues as children ( I still wait a few minutes before I go)...so
maybe he comes by it honest. Anyway, I had been listening to some
homeopathic talks (and the naturopath does some homeopathy) and got
the idea that maybe he needed some sort of remedie for this and was
hopeful about working towards a constitutional remedie in general.
Now I feel lost again. Is constitutional work done with kids? What
age can they start? Are there any pros / cons? Anyone with other
suggestions (i.e. am I just a crazy mom 'cause this is something
he'll outgrow)?

My 2 year old daughter has these horrible temper tantrums that Calms
Forte 4 kids (Chamamilla) works well for and seems to be indicated
for as she does the whole bit with running away and throwing things
on the floor including her self at time. She doesn't always nap and
hasn't since about 14 months, so I know in part this is an over-
tired issue and worry about this too as she is starting a 3 day a
week montisorri preschool program where she will have to nap (maybe
peer pressure and a good nap will resolve this on its own). Anyway,
my worry for her and why constitutional classical homeopathic
treatment seemed like (help me here) the right way to go was because
I was upset about issues at home throughout most of my pregnancy and
had a very out of character experience the whole time...she seems to
carry these issues now. Is this possible? Also had a bad pnuemonia
while pregnant, I'm sure d/t a weakened immune system because of the
emotional upset (coughed for 10 weeks and I am hardly sick, or at
least sick enough to not be at work). Am I on the right track with
her? My thought is I don't like the idea of giving the Calms Forte
too much (like a daily or now more like weekly vitamin), I would
rather work towards a permanent fix. I am so confussed cause the
naturopath didn't take a very good history (mostly seemed to be
trying to sell himself as a practioner and I'm sure will work out
fine for the acute stuff) nor had any interest in my emotional state
during her preganacy. Any thought?
I would be greatful for ANY information anyone want to share. I was
hopeful about having the whole family looked at all at once and feel
like I blew it, not to mention all the resouce funds I had set aside
for this particular venture!
Thanks,
Judy

Hi Sabyrah,
Yes, constitutional work is definitely done with children, and they can
start it at whatever age problems might appear. (I wouldn't see any
reason to begin treating a child unless there is some sort of
difficulty / problem, but homeopathy can treat and resolve conditions
that a "regular" pediatrician would tell you are just "how s/he is"; or
just "what some babies do"...

It sounds like you found someone for whom homeopathy has not been a
primary focus, and they are not well grounded in the full scope of it.
What a shame! And your whole family.... I hope you weren't paying a
full initial visit fee for each family member!!

Somewhere I've seen a list of questions one might ask a homeopath, to
see whether their practice meets your needs. Does anyone remember
where... One good question would be, what percentage of your practice
is homeopathy? And with children, IMO it is very valuable to have a
homeopath who is willing and able to do *both* constitutional and acute
treatments--I've heard of some who do constitutional only, and don't
want to deal with acutes. But wow that acute prescribing can be
*soooooo* valuable with the little ones!

Where do you live? Have you looked at www.homeopathy-cures.com, "Find
A Homeopath" button on the left--gives a state-by-state listing of
homeopaths who are known to the list compilers to be classically
trained. Tho no list will be exhaustive, it could be a good starting
point.

No you are not a "crazy mom"!!!! You've come at this from an educated
standpoint, and (sigh) didn't get lucky with your first choice...
Still, as you say, could be very helpful for acutes, if needed in the
mean time.
Best wishes,
Shannon

yes, we paid initial consult fees for the whole family.

I did ask in a 20 minute phone conversation (I thought that was generous) how much of his practice is homeopathic. He said 30% because he also does herbs and nutritionals. He and I juve with the fact that he isn't pushing a lot of product, in fact had no recommendations for changes to my current vitamin regeime though recommended some GABA for my daughter and Taurine for my son...He was recommended by a friend with a child with somewhat similar circumstance to my own son.

Guess I should have been more direct and asked if he practiced classical homeopathy in what % and how he felt about constitutional tx.

Thanks for the website.

Judy (Sabyrah is an Arabic name, now my middle name, for patience...)

Well, altho it's a shame he doesn't do constitutional work, hopefully
he'll still be helpful... Maybe when/if you find a classical /
constitutional prescriber it will be feasible to start the others
(gulp) one at a time in addition... That's what I would do, and would
recommend. Hope you find someone who suits!!
