'Penicillin' found in wallaby milk

AN ingredient of wallaby milk that protects joeys from infection
could one day become the magic substance doctors desperately need to
kill antibiotic-resistant hospital superbugs.

Australian scientists have found a compound in the milk which, in
laboratory testing, is 100 times more effective than penicillin at
killing a wide variety of fungi and bacteria, including golden staph.

Research team leader Ben Cocks said the compound, dubbed AGG01, could
have a profound impact on human health.

"This compound has the potential to be commercially synthesised and
may prove vital in the war against increasingly resistant human and
animal diseases," he said.

Dr Cocks said the compound was special because, instead of just
stopping bacteria growing like many other antimicrobials, it actually
killed them – and quickly.

Also what people need to keep in mind is that wallabies have 2
teats..one that produces milk for the newborn and one that produces
milk for the joey at heel..... and they're different!!!
Human milk changes but little over time and is consistent across the
planet despite the nutritional staus of mothers. For those in famine
conditions some of the fat and water soluble vitamins will be a tad
lower than those in the milk of more well-nourished women but the
majority of the whey fraction constituents is consistent and universal.
The only element that drops in human milk after 6 months is zinc and
mothers need to be aware of that and take steps to address that with
plenty of zinc-rich foods.
This is probably a consequece of evolution. When we lived in the caves
the easiest and most plentiful weaning foods would have been seafoods
so our milk began to reflect that.
