Jan Scholten is of course famous for the creation of an alchemical model

demonstrates. He has two books out which give mineral content of plants.
These can be experimented with to get possible clues to relate element

Legumes (edited together from Lecture by Jan Scholten)
=======
================
General Legumes
€Theme: PERFECTIONIST, then EXHAUSTED.
€Theme: FEELING USED
Legumes (and Oxygen) feel used. They may appear generous, but when they
give they expect to be paid back (cf. Ars) so as to avoid this feeling.
€Theme: DUALITY FULL : EMPTY
Some beans are poisonous because they are indigestible and have
"anti-nutritional factors". They should feed you but they don't. This
illustrates a theme in this family: you feel full but you haven't had
enough, you still feel poor. Thus the DUALITY of the Legumes. One Pt was
in someplace pristine, but still feel ³dirty².
Dutch sayings about beans (legumes):
"Hunger makes raw beans sweet" (not true; they are indigestible!)
"You have to shell your own beans" (quality of these remedies: you have to
do things for yourself)
In the army, they have 3 kinds of poor cheap food, one is beans
"You're in the beans" = you are completely confused
"You're full of beans" (in English)
"not worth a hill of beans" = worth nothing
€Theme: CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME (CFS)
Jan Scholten looks to this family first in true Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
"Everything I enjoy doing, I have to pay for it later" (Legume statement and
typical CFS statement). When a pt came in she couldn't walk one flight of
stairs to his office. She asked him to move his office! Typical CFS pt, they
put the burden of their problems on you. One CFS pt (after Medicago sativa)
went to a psychotherapist. It's good for her, a healthy change. She talks
and gets rid of it and accepts the fact that others don't want to hear it
any more. She doesn't want therapy, just wants someone to talk to. CFS
patients are hard to have as patients. When they are coming for an appt. you
feel, "Oh my God, there they are again, I can't do it any more"-you have
caught their attitude.
The whole family produces wrong amino acids in urine hence can mimic some
metabolic disorders which create chronic fatigue (when a legume is the
remedy for a case of true Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Standard
medicine will perhaps find that connection within a few years. Alphalupoic
acid therapeutically for CFS helps detoxify the amino acid asparaginine in
urine. These CFS people are toxified by an amino acid in their blood which
makes their urine smell like peanuts. ODAP (found in chickpeas) has two
amino groups so body doesn't know how to handle it. ODAP is not an allergen
or digestive problem, just a toxin to motor nerves.
€Theme: NITROGEN
This group contains nitrogen-fixing plants like alfalfa (Medicago sativa)
and also many types of beans, and plants like the Peanut plant. Nitrate
fertilizer in agriculture makes plants expand. Our culture wants more,
more, more! The natural method in agriculture is laying a field ³fallow² to
let it rest for a season or more. A ³cover crop² - a nitrogen-fixing legume
is planted instead of a crop to allow the soil to regain elemental
nitrogen.
From a legume pt: friend irritates her but she is afraid to say anything. "I
might become explosive" which is a Nitrogen quality. Worse in a crowd is
also Nitrogen, because of the desire to expand. Also averse fat of meat.
Also aggravation in a.m. Desire to enjoy, have fun. All these are generals
for Legumes because they are Nitrogen-related.
In pharmacology nitrogen compounds are used for better erections-expansive,
but can lead to priapism. Amylnitrates ("poppers") used by a lot of gay men
for better erections and orgasms. Congestive quality with erections. Two
sides of every remedy. Can lead to exhaustion later. AIDS pts who have
Kaposi's sarcoma have almost always used amylnitrates. So Amylnitrate is a
good remedy for Kaposi's.
€Alfalfa representative
If you know a case needs a legume, but don't know which legume to give,
start with Medicago sativa first. It is the most general legume.
==================
Clinical - Legumes
*Chronic Fatigue -- JS goes for this family first in chronic fatigue.
*Myalgic encephalitis, weak muscles and brain (not MS, which is just
muscular)
*Mononucleosis (Glandualar Fever in UK) and NWS it
*Paralysis (Lathyrus, Astragalus, Physostigma -- Lathyrus is one of
best remedies for polio, with spastic walk and knees touching)
*Epilepsy (Indigo, Physostigma, Cytisus, Laburnum)
*Full stomach, nausea, eructation, rumbling, flatus in abdomen,
typical for eating beans (!). Cows can explode from eating alfalfa, which is
also
in this family (Medicago sativa)
*Diarrhea or constipation (Senna is in this family)
*Typhus, Typhoid (Baptisia)
*Diphtheria (Baptisia)
=================
Mentals of Legumes
*Poverty: beans are poor man's food traditionally, cheap protein,
make you feel full. Fear of not having enough (food, warmth, energy) like
Psorinum.
*Perfection like Iron series, "my work has to be 110%", can't enjoy
life any more
*Duality: live in 2 worlds: enjoy nature and simplicity, want
idyllic vision of nature, but have to live in city and work hard
*Symptoms worse thinking about them (like Oxalates but Legumes don't have
oxalic acid)
*Can't concentrate, can't think
*Legumes are like nitrates because protein has a lot of nitrogen,
also they fix nitrogen in their root nodules, so similarities to Nitricum
remedies, Iron series and Manganum.
=========
Physicals of Legumes
*Worse wet cloudy weather (loss of crops)
*Worse moldy (food or weather)
*Averse peas, beans, lentils, cheese (protein)
*Sleep: desire much sleep, very fatigued, but can't sleep and wake
unrefreshed
*Vertigo as if drunk
*Poisoning by legumes: they have an amino acid which substitutes for
glutamine, over stimulates motor nerves, which causes spasm but they are
over stimulated killing the nerve cell.
=========
Differentials - Legumes
DD perfectionism of Gold Series: But Legumes are more like the Iron series.
Typical Iron vs Gold DD. Gold Series will feel their whole organization or
company has to work well to perfection. Gold takes responsibility for
others, and then feels it is too heavy. Legumes take responsibility for
their own job, take care of themselves, but feel it is too heavy.
DD perfectionism of Iron series: similar type of perfectionism, working
hard, doing it all yourself, not like Silver/Gold perfection. Studying at
university is Silver (creative, shaman) series. Studying in school is Iron
series (just memorizing, hard work). The normal working person's perfection.
Also typical for teachers. (cf. Manganum: often are teachers, very patient
in teaching). Legumes have the same sense of responsibility as Iron Series.
Duality between the need to work (Iron) and the desire for play (Carbon
series esp. Nitrogen). Look for example at Ferrum nitricum and see how it
compares with the Legumes.
DD: Acids for CFS: JS says acids are more commonly for the acutes of CFS.
Acids don't have lamenting quality ("I can't do it any more") and they don't
need to talk about it. Acids give up, e.g. Phos acid goes from desire for
deep contact with friends, siblings, etc. to devastation when the person
dies, has no reason to live, but they don't complain the way the Legumes do.
============
Questions - Legumes
Q: part of plant used:
JS does not make a big differentiation between roots, leaves, flowers. The
essence of the remedy is throughout. Unless the theme of the remedy is
"rooting", for example. Then you may need the root part of the plant.
==================================
MATERIA MEDICA EXAMPLES - Legumes
€Examples: MEDICAGO SATIVA
If you don't know which legume to give, start with Medicago first. It is
the most general legume.
Medicago = alfalfa, lucerne, used to feed livestock and fertilize
soil. Good remedy for marasmus, loss of appetite, emaciation. He found it in
a case by crossing Leguminoseae (because she had chronic fatigue) with
another sx not typical for Legumes. Medicago is a small plant with very
deep roots. Alfalfa pts have to dig deep for energy for many
years, then they are exhausted. Loss of appetite.
Aside: Each remedy has a desire for certain colors, each has meaning, e.g.
Conium likes black and shuns the light.)
€Examples:BAPTISIA
Baptisia has these rubrics:
* answer, sleeps at once
* answer, stupor returns quickly after (he didn't seem to hear JS's
questions)
* confusion of mind, identity, as to his, duality, sensation of
(Boericke)
* confusion of mind as if intoxicated (this is where chronic fatigue
comes from: a kind of toxic state in the brain)
Dullness, confusion, stupor, coma, exhaustion, aversion to work are all
chronic fatigue sx. When you do an extraction of Legume symptoms from the
repertory, other remedies are there too but Legumes are the strongest under
these rubrics, so they are best for chronic fatigue.
€Examples: GENISTA TINCTORIA
Genista tinctoria has strong vertigo. Does not show up so much in the
Repertory. Contains scopalamine, so DD Hyoscyamus and Stramonium. Other
Genista pt also had problems with his friends. Probably a part of the
remedy.
DD Phos: probably the plant contains more Phos than any other
legume. Other pt's complaint: could not enjoy vacation because he was
having problems with his friends who were on vacation wth him.
After one month on Genista she was stronger, more cheerful, less tired,
less busy in her mind with thoughts of being tired. Can do sports again.
€Examples: MELILOTUS ALBA
Anne Frank is a typical Melilotus. Feel pursued, persecuted, watched, have
whispering speech, feel safe if they are anonymous. Timid, want to go home,
or leave home and hide because home is not safe like Anne Frank. So it
could be for children running away from a dangerous home. Sankaran says it
is for a minority group persecuted and repressed or someone living in a
country occupied by a foreign regime. [could also be for a woman living in
constant fear of a violent abusive husband who totally controls her and
threatens to kill her of she tries to leave him]. Melilotus has strong
physical sx: congestion, flushes of heat like Nitricum, < hot or rainy
weather, convulsions, epilepsy.
€Examples: ARACHIS HYPOGAIA
If a pt aggravates severely on a food, give that food as a remedy. Boy with
peanut allergy, it was his most outstanding sx, reacted even if his mother
kissed him and had eaten peanuts.
JS gave Arachis hypogaia as a remedy to an allergic pt. and it worked. This
strategy of course doesn't always work. Hypogaia means "under the ground".
If someone is in an Arachis state, then Arachis will aggravate his state,
like "flooding" in psychotherapy, e.g. if pt has fear of crowds they bring
that person to a crowded place to aggravate the fear and then they will see
it is nonsense.
Q: could pt get anaphylactic reaction to Arachis remedy? JS: Aggravation
would not go to anaphylaxis. Now pt he does not react to touch e.g. mother's
kiss but he is afraid to eat peanuts. Fear of peanuts is also an Arachis
fear.
If pt needs Robinia, could get reaction to Arachis because remedies are
close in the legume family. Usually the wrong remedy gives a reaction.
