ERA/ART

Dear interested parties,

This was sent to the homeolist but I thought it might be of interest to
some on this list that did not see it.

First of all, the ERA/ART method can not replace the study of the
repertory and materia medica. It is only a confirmatory method that helps
one to make some very difficult decisions at times. This research that was
done in the 1920s under the auspices of G.B Stearns MD was performed by
very well trained group classical homoeopathic physicians. It was developed
by homoeopaths for homoeopaths and it not a spin off from some other
system. These MD homoeopaths were very good at clinical methods and
physical exam. My Indian colleague are well prepared for such methods
because they learn a physical exam in school although some don't use it as
much as they should.

Today most of our schools in the West don't even teach such methods. I
understand that many in West have to be careful about diagnosing, etc., but
we homoeopaths can use this to collect symptoms and understand the nature
and stage of the disease state. Just do not say to the patient you have
this disease so take that! Anyone, however, can examine someone else with
their permission. There is no law against listening to the heart. You have
all heard me say that one has to be careful with constitutional treatment
in cases with compromised vital organs, obstructed organs of elimination,
and unstable and weakened vitality. Well, how are you going to know this if
you don't examine the patient? Too many modern homoeopaths just sit behind
the computer screen and NEVER he touch the patient! This puts some people
off. They say "But they didn't even look at me!" Instinctively they no
something is wrong!

So the first requirement to doing autonomic reflex testing is learning a
good physical examine. That is why too few persons can use this method.
They don't really know the related medical sciences. I think EVERYONE doing
homeopathy should take CRP and first aid courses so they can offer first
aid and manage emergencies and transport serious ill and injured patients
properly. Then they should learn decent physical examine so they can make
basic assessments. Learn to read the pulse, check the BP, read the pupils,
auscultate the heart and lungs, to use percussion on the chest and
abdomen, examine the eyes, ears, nose and throat, palpate the organs,
assess the tissues, check the reflexes, etc. This will help you to know
your patients better and collect more symptoms. A patient may say I feel
hot but they are cold to touch. How can you collect this complete
characteristics without touching the patient? In a serious lung conditions
certain remedies are known for certain parts of the lungs. How can you
collect this precise location without auscultation, palpation and
percussion? I have collected eyewitness accounts of Hahnemann doing
clinical exam when necessary. He would take out his old fashion wooden horn
stethoscope and listen to the heart and lungs!

Once you have learned the basic physical examine well you can do ART
easily and quickly. There will be definite changes in pupil dilation; heart
beat; respiratory rates; tension in tissue and organs; the intensity of
pain under palpation; reflexes; postural deviations; leg lengths; etc. I
also use the traditional osteopathic examine including cranio-sacral
readings to test remedies. When counting the respiratory rate and
auscultating the lungs sounds there will be great changes for the better
just by exposing the patient to the remedy while it is still in the bottle.
Heart rates and the sounds of irregular heart beats, mummers will change
for the better. This will show on the ECG. The ART reflexes are homeostatic
in nature and cause a state of more balance.

If you are a good pulse reader you can tell a great deal about the
patient and their remedies. You will see things other will miss. You can
see things that are coming long before they manifest. ART can also be used
in specific lesions. If you percuss the apex of the lung you will usually
get a hollow sound. If you percuss an congested section of the lungs you
get a dull should. When testing remedies one finds that a good remedy will
suddenly make the apex sound dull and the dull sound over the congested
area of the lung hollow! You can also tell when a remedy might cause
aggravations or be bad for the patient. If the heart rate and sounds,
respiratory rate and sounds, pulse, etc., get worse it is the wrong remedy.
If it gets better the remedy will be helpful. If the tissue tension and
pain on pressure reduces it is the good remedy. It they get worse it is the
wrong remedy. If nothing happens the remedy won't do anything to the patient.

A pupil pinned by light will dilate under the influence of a similar
remedy. If nothing happens it is not that dynamic. If the pupil dilates and
then gets shaky it is the sign of aggravation. If one uses a dialectic
object like a glass bottle and rubs it gently against the abdomen or back
and tests a remedy the bottle will "stick" do the changes in galvanic skin
response. You can even check this on a galvanic skin response meter. There
is a homoeopath in my state who uses the stick method on the abdomen and
the GSR meter at the same time. The bottle sticks, the buzzer goes off, and
the needle changes. Once you get a good remedy then you can screen potency
for optimum reaction.

If you hook the patient up to a number of biofeedback system like heart
beat monitors, vascular analyzers, muscles tension, GSR, ECG,even an EKG
you will see changes when a dynamic remedy is placed by the patient. You
can even see changes in heart function and other functions on a
fluoroscope. There are computer systems that read stress levels through
biofeedback. Test remedies with these systems and you will see changes. I
am sure MRI would show real time changes in circulation, etc. I have really
teased the minds of some on my allopathic counterparts with these methods.
I have them examine the patient and then I change all their reading for the
better by holding a remedy in the air 3 feet away! They are mind blown.

Learning a good physical examine is important in the first place. You
will never be a full homeopathician without it. You will always be a lay
person no matter how many courses you take because you won't really
understand the patient and the stage of their disease. I have to do this
when necessary because I am in the front line. I may put my stethoscope up
to the heart and I don't hear "lub-dub"....I hear squish-swash. Now I know
something is wrong with this person's heart and I will send them for a work
up. If I can find a remedy that makes squish-swash sound more like lub-dub
there is a chance to help them. The ART method turns the ordinary clinical
exam into the discussion with the vital force through the auspices of the
autonomic nervous system. This transforms the passive physical exam into an
active biofeedback system. Unlike pendulums even AK muscles testing the
operator is not part of the loop. He or she is a unprejudiced observer
using a standard well recognized scientific method in a uniquely
homoeopathic way.

Back in the 1970s Dana Ullman (yes we were young tyros in those days)
came to see me and said :"David take a look at this". He had a copy of an
old Homoeopathic Recorder in his hand with the results of G.B. Stearns
research in ART. He knew I was a pulse reader and did OMT and the like so
he thought I might be able to make sense of it. I was already doing
acupuncture and listening to pulse changes during needle insertion. As
anyone who uses acupuncture knows these changes are immediate. Well it did
not take me long to test a few remedies and low and behold the remedies
changed the pulses just like the needles did! It worked!!! Then I learned
all the reflexes in the article and more based on my experience in
osteopathy, acupuncture, etc. That was many years ago and both Dana and I am
a lot older but I am still grateful to him for this gift. 30 years later
there are 1000s of patients who have benefit from this thoughtful gesture.
Those who master the full system will understand things that are impossible
for most.

I do not use this on every patient, especially in when doing volume
practice, but I use it sometimes just to make sure I have the a decent
remedy and potency. If I am stuck between a few remedies this method makes
it as clear as night and day. It can not tell you if you have the "best"
remedy as the vital force and nervous system can only respond to what you
offer it. You cannot test every remedy in the world. You still have to use
the classical method to find the most likely remedies. It is not a perfect
method because nothing is but it is helpful tool developed by classical
homoeopaths for classical homoeopaths. This method is definitely part of
the medicine of the future!

I hope this makes it the subject of ERA and ART clearer for one and all.
