Dear Jean, not sure it has been formerly proved, Clarke is the main
source of information. Salt petre (kali nit) certainly is a component
as is sulphur (hence the eruptive skin sx) and it would depend on what
source of gun powder is used in potency as to other ingredients. So it
would be more than useful to know if it has been proved and what is
actually is in it as this could be variable depending on tradition.
Best wishes, Joy

Is the gunpowder remedy used today the same as black? Only I notice he says
that modern gunpowder is different.

from an earlier discussion with Julian Winston:

When discussing pharmacy, Gunpowder is really in a unique category
because it is a single substance that is a mixture rather than a
compound. And we are talking about BLACK POWDER not modern smokeless
gunpowder.

When B&T was cleaning out in Philadelphia, I found three cans of FFFg
("3 F") black powder in their "raw material" cabinet. They didn't want
it. I took it home and shot the old cap&ball Remington with it for a season.

Most of the info comes from Clarke. He wrote a neat little book
called Gunpowder as a War Remedy.
It is made from Potssium nitrate (75%), Charcoal (15%), and Sulphur
(10%). The formula CAN vary. Roger Bacon made gunpowder (back in the
1600s) with a pound of sulphur, two pounds of charcoal, and six
pounds of saltpeter.

In any case, all the ingredients are mixed in a mortar until of equal
fineness. The mixture is then moistened with water and the resultant
putty-like stuff is compressed into a cake and dried. The cake is
then granulated through screens to obtain varying degrees of fineness.
When ignited with a spark, it burns fairly rapidly and produces a
great amount of gas. When ignited in a confined space (like a rifle
barrel) it produces gas which expands and will either blow up the
barrel, or push out the bullet which is, hopefully, designed to move.
When ignited it puts out a large cloud of blue-grey smoke, and has a
unique "sulphur" like smell-- much like the smell fom shooting
cap-guns-- if anyone remembers those... Black powder, in and of
itself, is NOT explosive.

This is "black powder" and not the commercially available gunpowder--
which is also called "smokeless." Smokeless powder came into use
sometime about 1892.

These days, once the powder is granulated it is covered with a fine
film of graphite-- to give it a "slippery-ness" so it can pour
without clogging.

gunpowder as a distinct entity and was used to make 1x, 2x, 3x, etc
etc as opposed to mixing together kali nit, sulph & carbo veg each at 3x?

Gunpowder is a MIXTURE of ingredients and NOT a chemical bond-- like
the salts. It is, I think, the only mixture used in the Materia
Medica. But the mixture MUST be made in roughly the above
proportions-- otherwise, it isn't gunpowder.

From my understanding of it the 'smokeless' versions had sugar added to
the mixture as this is what reduces the smoke. The type of charcoal is
also variable - the chinese used bamboo back in the 8thC and the early
europeans used willow. Perhaps the pharmacies are the best people to
ask what has been used although the only really useful purpose of this
would be to know that they all use the same source. Best wishes, Joy
