Dear all,
What's a rubric, or rubrics, for personally messy at home?
My friend, 60, has a very full life -- is a member of a successful
massage collective that depends on intercommunication and sharing of
responsibility, leads services and events at her temple, has just organized a move of her
elderly aunt from NYC to Boston, including finding her aunt temp placement in
assisted living during the move -- among other things.
Very accomplished and responsible! Never married, an adoptive mom (of
a now adult son), happy, laughs easily, is sociable, I've never seen her
hostile or even overly angry, loves to travel. She's critical of others (a lot)
but not in a hostile or vindictive way. Basically an up personality, not a
self-pittier, only child, says her mom and dad were "out of it" re the wider
world, lives in a three-family with her cousin and, soon, her elderly aunt.
Yet in her own apartment, she's messy -- her bedroom, computer area and
dining room table are full of papers etc. and consistently unstraightened
(though not dirty -- she cleans). And it BOTHERS her but she won't/can't/doesn't
make the time and energy to take care of this part of her life. Saves junk
mail just in case she has time to read it because it might be important, etc.
This is why there is the new, booming profession, Personal Organizer
(I'm one).
Anyway, she has a life, for sure, but is disappointed with herself
regarding her messy home and her "inability" to straighten it up.
Rubrics?

Since you describe her as being accomplished and organized in other locations - perhaps this is a matter of skills and not something you need to 'treat' homeopathically. Since you are a professional organizer, you certainly have seen that a large percentage of these problems are the lack of experience, skills or self discipline.

If it is not a matter of organizational 'skills', then the concern goes to why. I had one lady who did not feel she deserved to take time to do her own things - serving others was very important to her - but to have others see that she only spend time on others and not herself was a prime factor - and I don't think she conscious of this for a long time.

I am anxious to hear what others come up with on this one - since I currently have two individuals that are 'messy' types - but in their cases it is in every aspect of their environments (office, home, car, etc.) and seems to give them comfort that they are 'doing something' and 'attending to business' rather than expending effort on 'organizing and cleaning up'. One is an artist who sees the messy environment as a 'true sign of his artistic mindset'.

Quite -I would certainly be exploring more about why it bothers her
