Did you know that Tamiflu is made mostly from STAR ANISE? Yes, that nice star-shaped spice used in Chinese cooking.

Or is anise just a common chinese folk or TCM rx for general flus and colds... and swiped by the Tamiflu makers as if it some super herb.

HOMEOPATHIC -- Anis. has one symptom is worthy of special remembrance. *Pain in region of third rib*, about an inch or two from the sternum, generally on right side, but occasionally on left. Frequent cough with this pain. Purulent tracheal and gastric catarrh of old alcoholics. Old asthmatics. Vomiting, epileptiform convulsions with biting of tongue. Colic of babies.
CLINICAL - Asthma. Catarrh. Colic. Convulsions. Cough. Hemoptysis. Lungs disorders. Stomach, catarrh. Rheumatism. Thigh, pain. Vomiting.
Modalities - The pain in thigh is worse sitting, better rising. Pains in the head are worse in morning, better in evening.
Abdomen - Three months colic, especially if it recurs at regular hours, bowels disturbed. Violent wind colic. Rumbling in abdomen. Pain in spleen region.
Back - Pain in back and chest. Cramp-like drawing, as from a cold in left side of dorsal vertebra.
Chest - Pain in region of third rib, about one or two inches from sternum, generally on right side, but occasionally left. Pain about junction of third rib with cartilages, hemorrhage, coughs, congestion and enlarged liver.
Ears - Buzzing in ears. Ringing in ears followed by sleep. Itching over left ear, going off when touching the place.
Face - Stinging sensation in upper lip, as if blood would press out, better from touch. Dryness of upper lip, which is drawn closer to teeth. Burning in inner surface of lower lip with sensation as if it had gone to sleep.
Food - Rye bread tastes good, its odor is refreshing. Satiety after eating but little. All food, except rye bread, tastes too salty or bitter, yet appetite is good.
Head - Pains in head, better evenings, worse mornings.
Heart - Palpitations with aphthae and weakness.
Limbs - Jerking and tearing in bend of left elbow and at same time in palm, a feeling as if an artery had been injured by a blow. Pressure back of right hand, between the two middle metacarpal bones, as though something hard lying between them, worse pressing hand against anything hard, not by touch. Left thigh feels as if broken in the middle while sitting, it disappears on standing.

Hi,

I checked on the www.tamiflu.com website and is described as
oseltamivir in the form of oseltamivir phosphate. Is oseltamivir
from anise?

It is the Shikimic acid found in Anise (and other plants -- actually it is found in most plants,
but high in some) that has been used to make oseltamivir phosphate, which is then converted mainly
in the liver by esterases into oseltamivir carboxylate. This form then, which is the end result of a
series of complex chemical reactions that takes approx 6 - 8 months to complete, is an inhibitor of
neuraminidase which is a protein on the flu virus cell, which allows them to enter one of the
organisms cells. By inhibiting this, the virus eventually dies.

Shikimic acid is also found in ginkgo, spruce, pine, and fir trees in varying amounts --- but as
mentioned above it seems to be found in most plants.

An interesting snippet of trivia --- it was originally made from a different acid found in the bark
of the cinchona tree from Zaire, but was abandoned as a source due to political upheaval.

The manufacturers chose Star Anise, from a particular part of China, for its high yield, and no
other reason as far as I can determine. Most of the Shikimic acid comes from the pods (not the seeds
as is used in Hom.) of the plant, but they are also making Shikimic acid by fermentation using E.
Coli (a special strain of it), because they have bought up most of the crops and will run out unless
another method is found to make it.

Based on the above information, it would seem that as usual, drug companies are only interested in
so called 'active' ingredients. Even today in modern Herbalism, manufactures are doing this,
extracting active ingredients from the whole herb, mistakenly thinking it to be all that is needed
to cause a result. Anyone who has used whole tinctures of herbs knows that not to be the case. The
part is not representative of the whole!

Re whether this Hom rem will show any use for the so called 'flu' -- well, having Shikimic acid may
or may not be a useful thing in treating the flu, but as you saw in this rem, it has some evidence
of use for lung problems, so may be of use if a virus was to go there ---- but, of course, there
are heaps of other ones as well ----- and it is listed as compativle after Aconite and Bryonia in
hemoptysis

And Thuja is a known herbal antiviral --- along with ST John's Wort and Neem leaf, but not sure if
it be the Shikimic acid component

Can't find any hint of gingko being useful as an antiviral either.

Herbally it is used to control flatulence and nausea, and is considered an antispasmodic for the
gastrointestinal system. It also has also been used for its mild diuretic properties, and for its
expectorant qualities in the treatment of bronchitis. Star Anise is also a popular folk remedy for
rheumatism and colic.
