vitality (L. Vigour Vita). On the physical plane we have the physical
organism and its systems, organs and parts. All of these levels work
synergistically to make up a human being. Hahnemann wrote in the first
sentence of the Introduction to the Organon that as long as humanity has
existed people have been exposed individually and collectively to diseases
or moral and physical causes. Thus disease may be collective or individual
or a combination of both and it may be mental or moral or a mixture of
both. Thus the human condition is simply intricate and intricately simple.
There are two types of causation, the persona and the collective. There
are also disease caused by a single cause and those caused by multiple
causes. There are three types of diseases, the acute, the subacute and the
chronic. There are four major types of long lasting chronic diseases, those
caused by the never well since syndrome, those drugs, toxins, poisons,
those caused by maintaining causes, and those caused by chronic miasms. The
proximate cause of most diseases are based on an aetiological constellation
rather then any one thing you can point out as the "sole cause".
We do not live in a perfect world. Some things are within the individual
sphere and others are collective. Persons are born with different
characters, different predispositions and different chronic miasms. Some
persons with serious chronic miasms are "old souls" that do not succumb to
intemperance and maintain a good mental outlook. Others are "troubled
souls" who seem born to suffer on all planes and are self destructive. Some
persons seem morally strengthened by serious physical diseases while others
seem defeated by every little discomfort. In essence, true "pathology" is
based on the state of mind not the physical abilities as everyone is born,
everyone gets old, every gets sick and everyone dies. This is the human
condition yet we are spirits not bodies alone.
A person who has psora can be lazy, dirty, sloppy, eat poorly and
irregually, drink too much beer, smoke too much pot, live off others and is
subject to many excesses. Many sycotic people eat too much rich food and
meat, gain too much weight. and do not exercise because it hurts and makes
them breathless. Some syphilitics tend to drink hard liquors and take
dangerous drugs like heroine because they wish to die. Yes, this is very
true on its own levels but some persons are exposed to unavoidable negative
conditions. Are all the children in Pakistan who are facing a freezing
Himalayan winter with little food or shelter suffering because of their
miasmic desires or because a great collective tragedy beyond their control?
So unhealthy living, poor diet, bad living and working conditions, etc.,
are not always under control of the individual. One must look at each
patient and situation on a case by case basis and make adjustments as
necesarry.
Sincerely, David Little
