Re: ATKINS DIET - Off Topic?

Dear Shannon

The link between juvenile diabetes and insufficient breastfeeding (and,
therefore, early exposure to cow's mik protiens) is well documented in
medical literature.
I'll list some useful references below and suggest a re-read of the MM with
respect to Lac defloratum which has diabetes within it's therapeutic range.

Borch-Johnsen K et al; Relation between breastfeeding and incidence rates of
IDDM Lancet 2: 1083, 1984

Fort P et al; Breastfeeding and IDDM in children J Am Coll Nutr 5:439, 1986

Mayer EJ et al; Reduced risk of IDDM among breastfed children; the Colorado
IDDM Registry.
Diabetes 37:1625, 1988

Karjalainen J et al; A bovine albumin peptide as a possible trigger of IDDM
N Engl J Med 327: 302, 1992

Kostraba JN et al; Early exposure to cow's milk and solid foods in infancy,
genetic predisposition and risk of IDDM
Diabetes 42:288, 1993

Cavallo MG et al; Cell-mediated immune response to B casein in recent-onset
IDDM; implications for disease pathogenesis Lancet 348:926, 1996

It seems that the B casein proteins destroy the Islets of Langerhan which
are found to contain antibodies to cow's milk proteins particularly B
lactoglobulin and bovine serum albumin. Apparently, these cross-react with
the beta cell membrane proteins, destroying them and thus the islet beta
cells.

In my clinical experience all patients who present in the Lac-h state are,
among other things, "grieving" over the early loss of the breast!
When was your cousin weaned? If he was still at the breast when exposed to
the viral infection I'd stake my professional reputation on the fact that it
wouldn't have impacted so severely.

If I could have a dollar for each time a mother, who happens to be still
feeding a toddler who succumbs to some sort of virus, says "Im SO glad I"m
still breastfeeding" I'd be rich.

regards
