The Japanese had to change their legal definition of death so that they could get kidneys that were fresh enough for transplants. Traditionally, you had to wait for brain death.

They are doing kidney transplants so it must have changed. If I find out the exact definition, I will tell you.

Traditionally, the family wipes the dead body so they wait for the body to cool. It is an important aspect of the mourning process.
