Yes...........when used improperly............that is the whole point, to know how to use what and when.

Thanks. Rosemary
I do use Western Herbalism concomitantly to homeopathy if and when it is absolutely needed and I am able to differentiate the effects of each.
When it come to TCM herbs, that is a bigger problem as it uses large doses of very active substances, akin to conventional pharmacology, even they are prescribed energetically (or so they should be).
Nevertheless, if the prescription is energetic, based on symptoms, tongue and pulses, generally there is a synergistic effect (as well as with acupuncture properly done), but when it is used in a this for that, allopathic approach, then, yes, there can be suppression, in which case I prefer either to have the patient stop the TCM treatment or wait until it is done and intervene then.
Not sure if that answers what you asked, but it boils down to "know what you do and individualize the treatment" as usual.

Herbs properly prescribed / improperly presribed - how do we
differentiate this?

The same herb if prescribed according to chinese medicine might be
because of 5 element theory.According to Indian medicine it would be
because of 3 dosha theory. The problem is none of this is so very
easily understood since the writings are couched in symbolism and
use archaic terms.

In this context of discussion, for a combination of herbs that were
taken for cold and cough, what decides their propriety or otherwise?
These have been used based on past experience for some kind of cough
or cold, not on 3 dosha or 5 element... not based on
phytochemistry...

The fact that the cough and cold are gone does not mean something is
not suppressed...it may be or may not be...

All I am pointing is there is no clearcut way of saying something is
properly prescribed or not in these ancient methods of prescribing -
lots of wisdom has been lost. The appropriateness is known more
after the fact of prescribing than before.

So in absence of such guidelines, there is always the chance that
some of these prescriptions can suppress.

And so, lots of common day-to-day herbal practice has potential to
suppress since not all people are masters of traditional and
phytochemical diagnoses.

I am not saying that such herbalism is bad or good- just saying that
suppression is possible since individualization is difficult (esp,
when the prescriptions are complex) and so NEVER is such a strong
word in this context. We know for a fact that even homeopathic
medicines do suppress. ( Not to forget that we do not have a
standard way of selecting a medicine)

It is supposed to draw out the water from the affected tissues...in
my grandma's parlance...

She would make a thick paste with turmeric, warm it up, apply it all
across the forehead and put a wet cloth on top of it... for sinuses,
or where people have flushed face and swollen face after catching
cold, I have seen this effective.

Hi Luise,
I'm sure you have heard / read the occasional case wherein a remedy
leads to what we *call* suppression--the symptom disappears, but the
patient's overall state worsens? It is uncommon, but can happen if the
patient is not very strong or if the dosing is very aggressive.

Are you denying that this chain of events has ever happened, or are you
denying that it should be called suppression?
Shannon
