I think the PAIN dictates that it should be addressed.

Are you able to work out just what has changed during this time?
I'd think that a "bigger picture" remedy would more likely be effective
than one targeted specifically and only to her sensations--if that is
even possible. E.g. is she feeling "more irritable" or "just sick of
it all" or "on-edge"--and then as full a picture as possible, of just
what she means by the description of what's changed?

Hi Donna,
How do you know.

Did the backache start *right after* one of those injuries and did not
go away or get better/worse since then?

If not, there must be contributing features, e.g. if it started later
and then did not change or only got worse one should think of scar
tissue, if it has gotten worse and better in between there may be gas
or muscle tension -which can be addressed to palliate.

Ah yes, I agree with the approach - but that is longer term management -
which includes proper case taking. This moment is emergency, acute,
'relief now or she will turn to meds' where the normal acute approach is
now complicated by self use - over use - misuse of homeopathic remedies.
From what I have been able to gather this particular episode has been
triggered by an unusual weather pattern and not any emotional element.

Of course there is no way to know every aspect - and of course there could be many contributing features. However the pain comes just prior to major weather events - or after specific activities (such as picking up leaves in the yard), and has no connection to time of day, time after eating, or specific foods, and she has no history of gastric complaints (yes - even though this is an accute situation, I did ask a few questions). It seems far more logical to approach this problem from a structural/inflammatory point at this time.

In the past I have just given Sulphur 200 - 1 dose and waited a month before retaking the case and prescribing. I often find that things have cleared which have been caused by taking too many remedies.

Are you thinking she will still respond to a remedy, but looking for a
different acute remedy, or ??

Luise,
Your comments may be general, but since they are under the heading of the current discussion of an individual's acute back pain, I would like to clarify:
a. When I suggested that cell salts would be something I would consider in this case - there was no indication that combo (multiples) would be used or used repeatedly - simply that they would be 'considered' in terms of her longer term care. I use cell salts a great deal in my practice and find them to be exceptionally useful. I am not aware that anyone frowned on them or considered them as causing harm in any comment made on this thread.
b. There was absolutely no assertion that her long term care or self use of remedies caused this problem - only that it was complicating the picture. In this case, multiple remedies that would ordinarily be good choices for this acute situation had been over used and no longer gave this lady relief. The situation before me was a muddle which I had not delt with before. I turned to this list, and it's broad experience and expertese to gain perspective and ideas to help this lady.
If your comments were simply made as a general opener to another discussion - please place it under a different subject heading so we may follow your line more clearly.

I was recently hospitalized for almost 3 weeks for multiple spinal problems, including slight vertebra slippage and herniated disk. The acute problems occurred right after a visit to the chiropractor (I am convinced he injured my spine). I was in excruciating pain for 24 hours, after which I went to the ER for pain relief, and they admitted me.
In the hospital I was taking Rhus tox and Hypericum, very frequently. However after a while, I got too many side effects, possibly from taking too much remedy. My homeopath told me to lay off all remedies for a few days. After that, I went on Calc Carb, which did wonders. The effects lasted about 12 hours instead of only 1 or 2 like the RhusT and Hyper. Gradually, the effects lasted 24 hours, then 36 and so forth as I got better.
In the hospital, the things that helped most were anti-inflammatory pain relievers like Ibuprofen, muscle relaxants, and short course of prednizone (steroids).
Out of the hospital, I immediately stopped all drugs and switched to supplements. I lots of Cod Liver Oil (10 grams a day), vitamin C (5 grams), Co-Q 10 (800 mg), glucosamine and chondroitin (because much of my pain was in the joints).
Outside of this, physical therapy has been INVALUABLE. I have a home health PT who comes to my house. They know exercises to do to strengthen back muscles to support the spine, and exercises for whichever level of mobility one is at.
That has been my experience. I hope it helps somehow.

In this case I was asking the group for perspective and guidance. I have experience in dealing with long term overuse of allopathics. I have no experience in dealing with self directed overuse of homeopathic remedies on this level. The muddle before me was intense and I was looking for ANYTHING to help this lady. The advice ranged from general to specific, some based on significant experience. All is most greatfully appreciated.
Yes, since I am unable to help her find an accupuncturist or appropriate physical therapist/doctor, I am still looking to see if a homeopathic remedy could be effective in giving acute relief in this situation. Even if not for this specific case, as homeopathic remedies are used by more and more individuals who are guided by magazine articles, health food store clerks, and internet research - this will likely happen more often. So this case will initiate more study on my part.
