Hi everyone
in my opinion, prescibing on 'character' is asking for gross error.
To be able to assess someone's character requires more than just observation, but requires
'judgement' --- and this is completely different to assessing someones signs/objective and
symptoms/subjective, and results could be influenced by one's 'vantage point'.
If we are going to prescribe on the proving and or toxicological symptoms as offered to us by the
forepersons of Homoeopathy, then we should recognise that these symptoms are not 'character'.
Creative interpretation is a fine art, but I think it is misplaced in the base art of Homoeopathy by
anyone without a plethora of experience not only in Homoeopathy, but in life in general. It is not
necessarily incorrect, but relies on the interpretation of the beholder, and the variables for
confounding that result are too numerous to mention.
Even though guidlines have been offered for constitutional types by Hering, Clarke et al., they are
not set in stone --- and are just guidelines --- indicators to keep an eye out for --- but due to
the nature of their need for observation to be uncovered, are open to error.
Even Sankaran's 'sensations' are symptoms in the real sense, as they are a subjective experience of
the patient.
In every proving there are many variations of results --- this is due to the fact that each prover
is a unique individual. Not every prover produced every symptom. They only can produce those
symptoms their constitution is capable of producing. And, it is told to us in the Organon, that a
remedy can only cure a symptom in an ill person, that it can produce in a healthy person. Even
though this staement is in someways over-simplistic, it is however the basis of our prescribing
method.
Until a better way to establish the effects of remedies, we are at the mercy of the provings, the
toxicological symptoms, and even Sankaran and Scholten type generalisations based on groupings,
which are not a far fetched as some may think. When another way is found, then we can expand our
prescribing methods.
I agree that there is a continuum of symptoms with remedies, however, I do not believe that each
person in illness, (as they weren't in health when providing the proving information), is capable of
producing the whole gamut. So, to NOT prescribe a remedy because something is NOT there, is to me a
complete misinterpretation. This, to me shows the lack of correct education in what to expect in a
patient --- and of interpretation of the results of the provings/toxicology.
The generalisation --- the bringing all the provers information together to form a 'picture' , as is
found in most materia medicas, is imo misleading.
Nux-v works successfully for ailments presenting without the need for the 'character' in place. Look
at Hering at the end of the Nux-v chapter on Nux-v. there are about 12 pages of one liners
describing the people and the symptoms cured by the remedy. The people range in age from 6 weeks
to................. The symptom totality, which can be found easily in works such as Hering and even
Lilienthal, clearly shows you the context of the symptoms, (which is often missed in the materia
medicas).
here is the list of 9 different types that MAY be suited to this remedy --- but surely, are not
enough to prescribe on by themselves!
From Hering:
Nux is especially suited to :
- (1) Very particular, zealous persons, inclined to get angry and excited, or of a spiteful,
malicious disposition.
- (2) Ardent persons; or disposed to anger, spite, or deception; always irritable or impatient.
- (3) Nervous, melancholic people, troubled with indigestion; venous constitution with tendency to
haemorrhoids.
- (4) Thin, irritable, choleric persons with dark hair, who make great mental exertion or lead a
sedentary life.
- (5) Vigorous persons of dry habit, tense fibre, ardent and irascible temperament and tenacious
disposition.
- (6) Bilious temperament.
- (7) Persons addicted to wine, coffee, or pepper and condiments, who live a sedentary life with
much mental exertion.
- (8) Debauchees, thin, irritable, venous.
- (9) Drugged subjects.
Best to you all

"The fact is we need any and every way of finding the right remedy; the simple simile, the simple
symptomatic similimum and the farthest reach of all - the pathologic similimum, and I maintain that
we are still well within the lines of Homoeopathy that is expansive, progressive, science fostered
and science fostering." (Dr. J. Compton Burnett)

Dear Joy
You have touched on a very interesting and important point
"Many, many people are sympathetic but they don't all need Nux."
I think it would be a worthwhile exercise if a group we could consider
characteristics in turn and expressed how they vary in different remedies.
That is to say a little bit of compare and contrast.
With your superb MM knowledge, please lead on. (Flattery gets me very
where!!)
