Simon,
If you spend time meditating and stimulating that part of your brain (the pineal gland), the top of your head will get sore as that part opens up. I don't mean the bones part, but something opens up. Don't know what, but it feels really sensitive up there. The lotus petals are at the top of the head. In the statues of the Buddha, they look like scales.

one before - I have sneaking suspicion you're joking:-)

It is interesting though that those who are influenced by Indian
culture refer to the vision as lotus petals whereas those influenced
more by south American culture tend to refer to them as Eagle's feathers

Either way this experience seems to be common to meditators

I had a discussion with someone recently who was interested to know
whether the pineal was at the front or back of the brain as there had
been a heated discussion between some friends as to its location, the
one side arguing that the pineal related to the third eye and was
therefore at the front of the head roughly in line with the middle of
the forehead, the other insisted that the pineal was at the back of
the head.

I was interested that the 'third eye ' has been so associated in
literature and word of mouth that popular convention now equates it
literally with a physical location and physical organ. Too many
people been reading Lopsang Rampa I imagine

Perhaps meditators should wear a hat when meditating to keep the top
of the head warm, although my personal preference is to balance a
saucer of water on top of my head whilst mediating - this not only
improves my posture and concentration to prevent a wet lap, but also
hopefully will encourage that lotus to open up;-)

It is only the root that is stuck in the mud, not the head, the
whole point of the analogy

Now if you are suggesting that a tap on the head would be the
solution , not the problem ,then that might be homeopathic!

When we are talking about lotus petals and lily stalks jutting out
of the pineal, then does this mean that the place where their brain
is supposed to be - filled with mud? Not a flattering picture - is
it?

Simon, Your metaphor is right. We all have blocks in the climbing of spiritual energy from lower to higher energy centers. The lowest center has the earth, survival mentality. Whatever gets up to the top, you physically can feel it. No kidding. For me, the opening is further forward for women. But my scalp is tender hurts more where a man should hurt. Go figure. Need a remedy?
