Dear Michele,
There has been a lot of suggestions: something nice,
sometimes funny from our dear members. I now offer one
sure technique which has worked for centuries if not
millennia in India : Neem Oil. Azadirachta Indica. I
have tested this myself when everything (poison
barriers, injected chemicals - ugh ! they were my pre
homeopathy days)failed in my house situated in a
clayey surrounding soil ( a favourite for termites).

On someone's suggestions I bought the oil for a mere
ten rupees (roughly US 20 cents) and diluted with
twice kerosene and painted over the termite holes with
a 1/4 inch brush. That was the end. Only twice I
repeated. Similarly for my garden I used the leftover
cakes after squeeezing of the oil from a agriculture
supplier and I no more need pesticides. neem oil is
not a killer. It is a sterilizer and enters into the
reproductive cycles of these insects and promptly
stops them. Plus its bitterest smell and taste are
additionally helpful. But only crude doses.

I know with white ants you don't disturb them until you have a course of
action planned.

Another possibility for ants (maybe termites, except I don't know how
you'd get them to walk across it) might be diatomaceous earth. It's
supposed to be effective against all "crawling insects", because its
sharp texture punctures the exoskeleton and dries them out. We use it
for fleas, and it works great. (Non-toxic, sometimes used as a mineral
source in animal feed, tho you shouldn't breathe in the dust, could
irritate eyes or lungs.)

Just before the termite discussion ends. I'm living with them
myself, they are chomping my house as I type.

There are two types, subterranean which live in the ground and build
mud tunnels up into the nearest appetizing wood and devour it. The
other kind is Drywood termites which bore into the wooden structure
and set up home, make galleries and develop a colony. When the
colony gets big enough they swarm at certain times of the year and
move into another area of wood/shed/house. So it's improtant to know
which you have - their habits are different.

If you can get access to the wood - as in your shed then you can
definitely use Neem oil (a fantastic natural garden pesticide for use
on plants when mixed with Murphy's soap and diluted (a lot!!)) or
what is commonly used by the organic part of the pest control
industry is concentrated orange peel oil - injected into the bore
holes and sprayed over the wood. I have done this in another house
where it was accessible - the smell of oranges after a while begins
to wear but it's way better than the smell of toxic chemicals.

If you need to treat the whole shed - they now also do electrocution,
microwave, liquid nitrogen, heat treatment, borax spray !!!! The
problem for me is that they are inside the walls of the house and
there is no way to reach them without taking the whole house apart.
(Which they are already doing quite well themselves!

I am faced with the possibility of the only other present alternative
which is tenting and using toxic gas and I hate that idea. So all
this to say if you can get at the wood you can treat it yourself tho
time consuming you could save your dear old shed.

I certainly believe that Homeopathy can be used to TREAT animals and
plants to IMPROVE their health. But my belief stops short of using
it as an insecticide... Even when we use it in human infections I
do not believe that the action is "cidal" - killing off the viruses
and bacteria. Homeopathy just establishes the balance between the
different organisms and the human body. The approach of suppression
and / or destruction is allopathic... Once again as a systemic
therapy we establish balance with homeopathy - not a I win - You
lose result...

In this termite business - my concern is where is the connection
between the medicine and the termite and "vital force". If the
termite were to infect me then I would agree that we can use
whatever is indicated. If a plant suffers a fungal disease - we
might try some homeopathy...

In fact for termites - homeopathy should act as a proving medicine
if our theory is correct - because we are not treating the termites
( because it is not the similimum) and it should not be a
physiological poison given the dilution - so in potencies it would
start a proving in the termites....

with a 'homeopathic' remedy.

I thought it was a joke to start with but apparently not!
ROTFL!
If anything a remedy would make them healthier and therefore more
likely to invade- it's what they do!

Try Iboga! - I can just see it now, having been given a remedy
which they are now proving, given on it's well known characteristic
of inducing guilt, the termite council has convened to best discuss
how to assuage their remorse at having invaded the humans habitat.
Lots of little termites wringing their hands and looking angst ridden
LOL!
