Simon et al, morning,
Don Hamilton, DVM
Homeopathic Care for Dogs and Cats; Small Doses for Small Animals
North Atlantic Books
ISBN 1-55643-295-X
This is a lovely book - readable, usable and as complete as any one volume
can be. He also has sections on philosophy, diet, vaccinations,... in
addition to Materia Medica and a discussion of symptoms and conditions with
the chapters arranged by body part/systems. Don's book is certainly not a
"cook book"
While McLeod was a great homeopath, his books are not always easy for the
user. They also lack the depth that Hamilton's book has to offer.
Certainly expand your library, read as many things as you have time and
energy to do - but if I was to suggest a single reference on homeopathy for
animals for the owner, Hamilton would be it.

That's why it's good to have a Certified Veterinary Homeopath on your
veterinary medical team.

I have been using homeopathy here at the sanctuary for about 7 years
now. It is invaluable for first aid situations and one can get a feel
for acute prescribing with enough reading and research. I have found
the traditionally recommended books by Pitcarian (spelling) and
Hamiliton to be of little help. Christopher Day, MacLeod are good
authors to start with, although their's is a more clinical
perspective. K. Walker authored a lovely book on homeopathic first aid
for animals; when I went away to the biotech conference last month, I
made sure the "pet sitter" could easily find it. Our chronic and
serious cases are referred to the experts. Still, one has to be
careful with that too. Our sanctuary's holistic vet is known for his
use of homeopathy with livestock and has authored several books, yet I
have found his prescribing to be way too "automatic" and his
recommendations rarely help. He has become little more than a nosodes
connection. I consult with two veterinary homeopaths and I am often
amazed at how different their recommendations can be.
