Aren't you asking the difficult questions? What came first -
weakening of vital force due to something and then suppression of the
resultant problems or suppression leading to weakening of vital
force? Egg or Chicken or Egg AND Chicken?
Related to these eggs and chickens:
Another related question - esp. for the homeopath vets we have-
Are animals miasmatically afflicted and if yes - what miams are
these? Syphilitic? Gonorrheal?
Are there specific miasms for different animal species? How are these
approached and treated? Is miasm theory applicable only to humans?
What about the chronic diseases in animals? Is there a homeopathic
rationale for chronic infections in animals and degenerative diseases
in them.
I would have thought dogs are very psoric- the fleas and itches that
they have and these could be suppressed very easily... any remedy NOT
homeopathic should lead to suppression - dog itches and then bites
the itchy spot and given that in olden day dogs generally did not
brush their teeth it is highly likely that their saliva and food
particles that apply on the itch could act as an UNHOMEOPATHIC
application and lead to suppression and voila - what have you - a

Dear Theresa,

ancestors were susceptible to the very infectious diseases that we call the
chronic miasms. Even Kent wrote that the mental decline of human beings
produced the "susceptibility" to psora but mental decline is not identical
with psora. This mental decline is involved in a whole host of diseases. In
the first line of the Introduction to the Organon Hahnemann wrote that as
long as human beings have existed they have been exposed collectively and
individually to disease of physical and moral causes. Individual causes are
unique to the situation of the patient and collective causes includes
things like the chronic miasms. Moral causes are mental and physical
causes are material. These are all based on susceptibility but they are not
all miasms. As to susceptibility Hahnemann wrote;
§31 - The-partly psychical and partly physical-inimical potences in life on
earth (which we call disease malignities) do not possess an absolute power
to morbidly mistune the human condition. We become diseased by them only
when our organism is just exactly and sufficiently disposed and laid open
to be assailed by the cause of disease that is present, and to be altered
in its condition, mistuned and displaced into abnormal feelings and
functions. Hence these inimical potences do not make everyone sick every
time.
The susceptibility to infectious miasms is increased by inherited
predispositions, poor diet, poor hygiene, crowded conditions, abuse of
medical drugs and emotional stress, etc. This is way proximate cause is
related to an aetiological constellation and susceptibility factors not one
single isolated factor. Mineral deficiencies are not "psora" because such
deficiencies make one susceptible to a whole host of diseases that do not
have the symptoms of psora. Such deficiencies, however, do increase the
chance of psora. Susceptibility is involved in every natural disease.
Inherited psora is based on unresolved skin infections in the
ancestors. Acquired psora is caused by unresolved skin infections
contracted by the individual themselves. These skin infections may be
caused by mites, bacteria, viruses or fungi because they share a similar
band of susceptibility, the same pathway of disease and produce a
homogenous set of chronic symptoms. The final secondary diseases are
conditioned by the nature of the patients constitutional predispositions
and environmental factors. This is what we do know from clinical
observation and group anamnesis.
It is not that we "hang" onto the names of names of the miasms for no
reason. They miasms ARE the infectious factors that take advantage of
particular bands of susceptibility and build on the previous terrain in a
particular manner that increases susceptibility. Each miasms is related to
the constitutional terrain in which they thrive and increases the
susceptibility to more complicated states as sequels. Sycosis leads to
syphilis and syphilis leads to HIV/AIDS. At each stage of the process the
inner terrain become more deranged the potential for autoimmune diseases
and immuodeficiency disorders increase.
In the end HIV/AIDS is associated with a host of acute and chronic
infections because of lowered resistance and increase susceptibility. In
this way infectious miasms piggyback one upon another as the susceptibility
factors increases and the vital force wanes. The same is true of the
inherited miasms. For example, the inherited TB miasms makes the person
more susceptible to acute miasms that affect the eyes, ears, nose, throat
and lungs. This is because these acute and chronic miasms share similar
bands of susceptibility and pathways of disease.
The removal of a chronic miasms does increase the resistance of the
patient to the same and similar disease and change susceptibility. We see
this with both the acute and chronic miasms. This is because to cure TB by
internal homeopathic remedies strengthens the immune system so that the
disease is removed by the power of organism. This is NOT the case when the
TB bacteria is removed by anti-tubercular antibiotics. This happens because
the remedy replaces the natural disease with a more dynamic homeopathic
diseases which the VF then seeks to remove from within to without. In the
process the susceptibly factors do undergo positive changes and the patient
become more resistant. This is because the patient is *susceptible* to the
remedy and the curative process increases resistance to similar complaints
in the future.
If one removes the TB the patient in no longer "tubercular" and the
person gains weight, no longer coughs, no longer sweats, has no lung
lesions, etc.. There constitution definitely under goes positive changes
and becomes more vital and resistant. Now if the person still is
malnourished, lives in dirty, over crowded conditions, still suffers
continual emotional stress, etc., these maintaining causes increase the
chance of reinfection. That is why it is very important to understanding all
the causes that lower the quality of life and increase the susceptibility
of the patient to disease. If we could not reduce susceptibility factors
and increase resistance we could not cure anything. Many times, however, I
have cure serious acquired miasms and sent the patient right back into the
poor conditions and they did not reinfect. I have seen this many times. So
the susceptibility and resistance factors do change!
Susceptibility is part of the constitution that relates to the what the
ancient Greeks call the homoeomeries,.which means those similar things of
which all phenomena are composed. These qualities are symbolized these
archetypal powers as the three force (+/0/-) and the five elements (earth,
water, fire and air). The homoeomeries produce the four temperament, the
choleric, phlegmatic, sanguine and nervous-melancholic. Each of these
constitutions has certain predispositions and are more susceptible to
certain diseases and miasms. Phlegmatic persons die of kidney failure more
often than the sanguine who tend to die of heart attacks and strokes. These
constitutions are not miasms but they are related to predispositions that
lead to certain acute, half-acute and chronic miasms as well as many other
states not caused by miasms. These non-miasmic causes include human greed,
which is responsible for a host of diseases and unneeded calamities!
In my view I do not think that susceptibility and miasms are identical
things but they are interrelated factors in the aetiological constellation.
Grief, loss and sadness combined with poverty and overcrowding easily opens
certain persons to TB but they are not the TB miasm. They also open persons
up to other diseases depending on the inner and out circumstances and the
what is in the environment. All these interdependent factors work together
to produce the final disease result. The remedy may remove the TB but one
also seeks to resolve the causes of the sadness, poverty and overcrowding
as much as possible. These factors are not the miasms but all these
conditions are inter-related and increase the susceptibility factors.
It is good you raised the subject of susceptibility as it is important
in the study of epidemiology as well as the study of disease and healing in
general. If you wish to understand susceptibility better my advice is to
study the four temperaments and their mixtures very closely. Through this
method one is able to understand the predispositions of the patient more
clearly as it offers insights into susceptibility.
As to guns, I am all for gun control!

Re: miasms/psora
Dear David,
I love your advice. "Patience pays." So I will keep looking for the differences between miasm and susceptibility. I think detailed study of the miasms will help because particular symptoms need to be differentiated as one or another miasm. As you say, this analysis does not always work. What reading would you suggest for studying the combinations of different constitutions? In the MM you see these terms, but until the Sanguine patient is sitting in front of me, because that is not me (I suffer from Kidney weakness not Heart weakness), I am not totally comprehending the difference.
I have been taught to carry a "heavy" box of doubts. (Yesterday I was caught in an internet hoax so I apparently my box is not heavy enough or not well enough organized for effective use.) Anyway, questions like "how do you prove that psora is inherited" come to my mind even if I have had several patients who have clearly inherited their psora. I guess I am throw off by the patient who does not fit the miasmatic analysis.
Throwing aside all such doubts, when I have a patient who clearly fits the miasmatic pattern, then I automatically categorize disappearing symptoms and aggravations as specific miasms trying all the while to gauge which direction the case is going on the miasmatic map. If on the other hand, my analysis is not miasmatic then this type of miasmatic case management might not work? Or, after say giving sulphur, I might suddenly see a clear miasmatic picture appearing. Does that happen also when you give remedies for reasons of say causation or because of a constitutional analysis? For some reason, the miasm appears.
Blessings,
Ellen

constitution in our materia medica but few modern homeopaths understand
their implications nor role in medical science.
Each of the four temperament reacts to the same stimuli in a different
fashion because of their innate susceptibilities and predispositions. One
one learns the characteristic signs and symptoms of the four temperament
they are very easily to see in most patients. The difference between a
phlegmatic temperament and a sanguine temperament IS as obvious as the
difference between water and fire. The same may be said about sycosis and
TB because the follow similar innate patterns! Sycosis produces cold,
watery retentions and causes unhealthy weight and growths gain while TB
produces heat, fever, sweat and emaciation. These are opposites. It is
important to understand the collective symptoms categories that found in
homeopathy. Two of the major categories related to constitutional
temperaments and chronic miasms, which of course, are interelated.
The homoeomeries have positive and negative qualities. The constitutional
factors come first then comes predisposition and then comes disease states
and miasms. The miasms follow the innate patterns found in the homoeomeries
found in the human constitution. The three stages of the miasms reflect the
why in which the constitution reacts to all infections. The mind'body
constitution sets the patterns. Chronic disease states and miasms affect
the constitution and modify its susceptibility and make the inner terrain
more deranged. The relation between inherited disease states and chronic
miasms and innate constitution and temperament are also interdependent.
Nevertheless, if we could not remove the miasms from the constitution we
could not cure because they are not the same thing.
Susceptibility and miasms are related but not identical. The
constitution and miasms are related but they are not identical. Inheritance
and miasms are related but not identical. That is why Hippocrates taught
that most disease are based on an aetiological constellation not one single
factor that can be called the sole cause. Constitution, susceptibility,
diathesis and miasms are the four pillars of chronic diseases.
If one think that all cases are based predominately on miasms and tries
to pigeonhole everyone into tight little miasmic boxes the system is being
transformed into hypothetical absolutism. That is why we study original
causal factors. If the person fell on their head and then went crazy that
is not a miasm. If some was serious sexually abuse and can not experience
intimacy that is not psora! Everyone has the inherited miasms in the family
tree but are they responsible for the presiding symptoms that the patient
suffers right now? If the constitution has adapted to the inherited miasms
and is focused on a psychological complex related to father figures we must
work with the psychological complex.
When the miasms are active THEN they display their classic
characteristics. This is when we focus our attention directly on the
miasms. My method is simple. When the symptoms of the disease state are
based on individual, unique causes within the constitution and temperament
of the patient I treat those symptoms first and foremost. If the symptoms
of the disease state are based on the collective causes related to the
chronic miasms and their characteristics I treat the miasms first. If the
symptoms are based on a trauma I treat the trauma first. If the symptoms
are acute when I see the patient I treat the acute symptoms first. If the
symptoms are chronic when I see the patient I treat the chronic condition
first. I allow the causes, symptoms, and attendant circumstances be may
guide. In this way, I follow the guidance of the vital force and the
residing symptoms. That is why I call Homoeopathy a system of flexible
response.
If one always tries to approach every patient the same way by fitting
them into neat little preconceived box or favorite method they are leaving
a very large part of Hahnemann legacy behind. Go to a one-sided
constitutionalist and you receive the grand constitutional remedy. Go to an
anti-miasmic prescriber and you'll receive a anti-miasmic remedy. Go to a
persons who does the mind-only method and your receive the psychic remedy.
Go to the low potency pathological prescriber and you receive the organ
remedy. Go to a high potency essence prescriber and you receive your
essence remedy in 10M. All of these have value but each method is NOT
suitable for every patient.
It is my view to learn how to use acute intercurrent, acute genus remedies,
the chief chronic remedy, the anti-miasmic chronic genus remedy, the
chronic intercurrent and the preventative remedy as a basis. Learn when to
use constitutional remedies for the whole as well as how to treat cases in
layers if and when necessary. This is the artistic method because it can be
individualized according to the originating causes (when they can be
known), symptoms, time and circumstances. One cannot see the innate
invisible vital force but one can observe its action in the human organism
by the signs, befallments and symptoms of the body and soul. These
manifestation make up the only conceivable Gestalt of the disease and point
to the curative remedy and case management measures needed in the moment.
Is is better to have a little healthy doubts balanced by openness rather
then be open too everything without question.

factor that can be called the sole cause.
Sincerely, David Little

Hello David,
Not quite, when they do their job, like they should, you receive the "only
conceivable Gestalt of the disease" remedy.
I agree with you, we should not rely on one method or angle, but study them
all and try to understand where they come from and relate to each other.
But most important is to realize that with all those possible different
angles to come to the correct prescription, we still are prescribing for the
present disturbance of the vital force.
The expression of disease may be on different levels of the constitution,
depending on the nature and cause of the disease,
and eventhough the present state may be a part a bigger whole, (when we look
at the total chronic disease concerning past, present & future), the present
state is a wholeness on its own, when we consider the "now" moment. The
corresponding remedy for what needs to be cured right now and here is the
simillimum.
Kind regards, Piet

Dear David,
I have read your analysis in other places, but perhaps because I have more case experience, it is making more sense now. Thank you for your persistence.
Blessings,
Ellen
