truth is,
Dear David,
The ancients in India sure did. They saw the body as an energy field
and defined the nadi's (energy meridians) and chakras (energy
vortices) used today in various forms of energy healing and also
accupressure and accupuncture. They devised yoga postures, pranayama
(breathing techniques) and put down moral and spiritual laws which
would make us perform at the optimal level and also conserve and
invigorate our energy levels. They also urged people to see beyond
the body and gave us details whereby we could evolve spiritually and
be less dependant on matter. Life, they said, was an effort to
convert matter into energy.
Unfortunately, due to lack of writing skills in those early days, the
knowledge was passed down orally and surely must have lost a lot till
they were written down nearly 5000 years ago. The knowledge was said
to be the truth and hence timeless. This is very unlike
scientific "truths" which change every few years and yet we are asked
to bank on them.
Even the written material was destroyed by invaders. We have only
pointers today. Efforts are on today to retrace the lost texts by
studying the healing arts of nearby civillisations. The Indian
Universities attracted students from all over the world and many of
them kept notes for implementing the healing arts in their own
countries.
We are very fortunate that we got back the energy concept via
homeopathy. In homeopathy we use the curative powers of various
substances. Thus we are dealing with pure energy here. The tantric
texts of India also hint at how many toxic substances can be
processed so that they become the elixir of life. They used mercury,
sulphur, gold, silver, and many other metals besides herbs.
Even while using herbs there was the emphasis on the curative powers
and not the material substances. There were details as to how the
trees/plants were to be worshipped, the various incantations
(mantras), the deities to be evoked and also the time and season for
plucking the parts.
There was the observation that minute grinding of the medicines using
pestels increased their potency like our own homeopathic potencies.
Much subtler potencies were also evoked by various rituals, chanting
of healing incantations, and asking the patients to follow certain
rules. The art of administrating the remedy was meticulously taught.
Many of the methods seemed obsecure but become more clear today when
we learn and discuss energy healing.
The people were taught how to merge with Nature and respect it so
that they had access to their own healing energies. Everything was
personalised, Mother Nature, Mother Earth. Each element was given a
form and worshipped as a deity. Even human aspirations and longings
were deified so that the inherent energy could be worshipped. Thus we
see so many God's in the Hindu panatheon. However it was also
acknowledged that all the various energies came from a single source
which was omnipotent, omnipresent, and one without a second.

Jagannath.
