Hello,
The medicinal solution and the split-dose are not exclusively for the
LM potency. Hahnemann introduced this method in 1837 for the C potencies
and the cases from this period show him using a remedy bottle and a
dilution glass. He continues to use this method for both the C and LM
potency throughout the mid 1830s to 1843 when he pass away.
If one waits for the duration of the previous dose to cease there is
little problems with repeating the dry dose. This was the method taught in
the first 4 editions of the Organon. In the aphorism 246 of the 5th edition
and its footnote Hahnemann revised the system and suggest that the remedy
could be repeated at suitable intervals before the duration of the previous
dose ceased. Fir this purpose he began to use olfaction and the aqueous
solution has his delivery system and introduced the split-dose at suitable
intervals to speed the cure.
IMO, the single test dose is very important whether on is using the low
or high Cs or the LM potency. How long one needs to wait before making a
assessment depends on patient and their disease as well as the time and
circumstances.
I can speak for you but I receive quite a few reports from patient and
practitioners that have been aggravated by the dry doses. That you are doing
well shows that your are careful and wait and watch properly. The
aggravations I see are often from giving potencies like the 200th and above
to those with organic pathology or that are hypersensitive. Some of these
aggravations ran for months and in a few case the person was never well
since. Some of this, however seems to stem from practitioners not
understanding the four major remedy reactions and not knowing the
difference between a similar aggravation, a dissimilar aggravations,
accessory symptoms and a natural healing crisis.
The LM potency certainly will cause aggravations when not used properly.
First of all, in aphorism 246 of the 6th Organon that anytime there is a
*noticeably progressive and strikingly increasing amelioration* the remedy
should NOT be repeated as long as this state lasts. The he says in those
cases that only show a *slow progressive* improvement that might take up to
100 days to show significant improvement the remedy may be repeated at
suitable intervals to speed the cure. So all of the statements about
repeating the LM potency every day or every other day in aphorism 248 are
ONLY for slow moving cases that do not respond to a single dose or
infrequent repetition. This is true with both the C and LM potency in
medicinal solution and split-dose. If one pays attentions to these details
aggravations usually are not produced. If on does not, repeating the LM
potency mechanically every day or other day will cases a good number of
problems.
A good amount of the information about the LM potency is of very poor
quality and has little to do with how Hahnemann used them. Almost every day
I hear the strangest things in the name of the 6th Organon! Hahnemann most
artistic method is usually change into the most mechanistic practice
possible where people think they can repeat the LMs like some allopathic
drug or something. The act as if no individualization is needed. Somehow,
they seem to ignore any problems or blame them on something else. There are
persons who say the LM potency "can't aggravated". That is down right
irresponsible!
What most people don't understand it that at the start of treatment
Hahnemann gave single doses (usually by olfaction) or short series of doses
of the LM potency and had the patient come back in 7 days. If there was
strong remedial actions in any direction he would usually give a week or so
of placebos. He constantly interpolated periods of placebos with the remedy
so as to prevent over medication and allow the medicine to act. He never
gave the daily or alternate day dose for very long without giving placebos
and waiting and watching. In many cases he gave much more infrequent doses.
The idea that Hahnemann gave the daily dose for weeks and months on end is
a complete myth. He used almost as much placebo as medicine.
What do mean when you say "with the single dose" the duration is longer?
Are you speaking of a single dry dose of C potency like the 200th? When we
speak of the duration of a remedy the major factor is the sensitivity of
the patient. Nevertheless, all things equal, a single dose of the LM 0/1
last much longer than a single dose of the 30C. I and my colleagues have
seen more than a few single dose CURES with the LM potency when they are
used properly.
Hahnemann mentioned the use of the dry dose the 6th Organon. He just
recommends that if the remedy is going to be repeated to speed the cure
that the subsequent doses be given in medicinal solution. Also, when
speaking of the most perfected method he was referring to the idea that
where a single dose causes a strikingly increasing amelioration *wait and
watch* and where there is only a slow improvement *observe and act* by
repeating the remedy at suitable intervals to speed the cure. This is what
he called the middle path.
This middle way is a better method than only using the single dose wait
and watch method in very case no matter whether the patient is improving
quickly, at a moderate rate or only very slowly. It is this new philosophy
that speeds the cure to 1/2 or 1/4 the time it would take in those cases
that show only slow improvement. If they are improving dramatically on the
single dose there is no need to repeat the dose for the time being. If they
are not then one must follow the 5 conditions of aphorism 246 to speed the
cure. This method is used for both the C and LM potency. This is what the
Paris casebooks show Hahnemann doing. He used the C and LM potency side by
side right up until he retired to his heavenly abode in 1843.
Personally, I believe that we should use any technique that seems
usable from any edition of the Organon. The 6th Organon does not preclude
what was written before it just expands on and adds new conditions and
methods for specific conditions. There is no need to wait and watch for 30,
60 to 100 days with the patient hardly improving if one can repeat the dose
at suitable intervals and cut this period in half or more. That is the main
point of both the 5th and 6th Organon philosophy. This new case management
procedure is applied equally to the C and LM potency.
If Hahnemann thought the LM potency was the only way why did he
continue to use the C potencies? It is obvious to those who have used both
potencies for a number of years that some patient do better on the C
potency and some on the LM potency. Like Shannon says; why limited oneself
in these matters? The dry dose, olfaction, and medicinal solution all work.
The 1-3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Organon all work on their own levels. The
important things is knowing when one must transcend the 1 - 4th Organon
methods because they do not suit the time and circumstances. I would
personally rather be in the hands of an experienced 4th Organon dry dose
prescriber who knows how to wait and watch than to be at the mercy of a new
age person cum homeopath using the LM potencies in a mechanical fashion
daily or every other day as if they can do no harm!
Sincerely, David Little
