mercurial state.

This is the problem with essence prescribing if you get stuck on just one
idea about a remedy without re-reading the materia medica. Aurum isn¹t JUST
about success versus failure. It all depends at what point the individual
joins the paradigm.

Where does the case begin? With the broken back? He feels small. Perhaps he
is on the Baryta / Lycopodium trail. How long has he been talking to
himself?

Why do you want to take this case from an essence point of view ­ already
there are so many remedies that could apply.

And to add to that choice ­ if this case is all about performance and
achievement (or lack of it) coupled with a fear of going high and feels
small (interesting core delusion?), what about Coca?

Unless you want to give the whole case we are all just guessing.

I wasn't really intending to give the whole case . It was just that he kept saying the same thing over and over again so I thought I would see what the group thought. What struck a bell with me more than anything was Baryta Carb. However I have a lot more work to do on the case with the help and ideas I have received from the group and thanks to anyone I have forgotten to mention personally including Jean.

I have to say that I am not that familiar with Herscu¹s methods either. But
how many methods are there, one for every homeopath in the world? I prefer
the way Julian said it in another post regarding Boenninghausen - find the
symptoms, give the remedy. THAT is what homeopathy is about.

We have to find our own way of doing this and creating methods can subtract
from the simplicity of realising what rx is the simillimum.

This pertains as much as anything to the need of understanding the remedies
and we know that an individual is unlikely to represent the whole sx picture
of any given rx (our job would be much easier if that were so).

But in chronic disease we also know that an individual can and will
tolerate, suppress, pass through, succumb and then partially recover from
their diseased state as it tries to take a hold. The vital force will be
visualising sx right from the start but each individual has a great deal of
machinery to avert the full take over of disease. Chronic disease wouldn¹t
be chronic disease without this. But each individual, depending on their
susceptibility, will succumb at some point of the disease paradigm, where
they can no longer tolerate their diseased state. They might already have
been through the allopathic route and perhaps many other healing processes
but when they choose to come to homeopathy then I think this is a vital
moment of knowing and understanding the client and their diseased state and
thus the remedy required.

Again, depending on an individual¹s general energy or lack of it, and
susceptibility, they might show a mixture of early, mid and late pathology.
The chain isn¹t always a straight line. They might have been ill for so long
that they¹ve been up and down the chain many times picking up, shedding,
suppressing, resolving etc, many aspects of the diseased state. And what
sometimes happens here is an apparent gap ­ parts of the rx picture seem to
be missing. I made a reference to Aurum ­ well known for its disappointment
from failure made even worse because they have been doggedly determined in
their striving for success ­ but this determination can be missing (lost?)
and all you see is the hopelessness, melancholy, grief, depression, self
condemnation. Aurum is solvent and even careful case taking will not
discover the lost or dissolved determination.

This is what I was referring to ­ it all depends at what point the
individual joins the disease paradigm.

Having said that I do see remedies as shapes and lines and chains etc
because it helps me utilise the point I have made above.

*** By faltering point, I mean that often too much emphasis is
placed on what's missing from a case than what's present. If a well-
known remedy quality is absent from a case, the remedy is often
discarded as the case is no longer considered similar to
the "essence" of the remedy. Aurum is a perfect example, where the
absence of the well-known Aurum determination might lead the
prescriber astray because the Aurum essence involves disappointment
or fear of failure *but* with a dogged determination. If part of
the essence is missing, the entire remedy falls out of favor for the
case. I've often heard homeopaths disregard Aurum because a pt,
while despondent, is *not* in a suicidal state. So more, or at
least equal, emphasis is given to what's expected but missing as to
what's present. I'd enjoy hearing how you, and others, overcome
this misguided focus and what I suppose could be described as a
misinterpretation of the syndrome, and ultimately a remedy, as it
presents itself.

I know I keep saying this but if we rank the sx of a case and build a
hierarchy, a priority of what needs to be cured then this faltering needn¹t
happen so much.

The other problem comes partly from how we try to remember remedies ­ we
feel the need to minimise the remedy picture often along the lines of its
essence and essence prescribing just compounds this and we get a fixed idea
of that remedy but it is only part of the rx.

Keynotes are better, or red line sx, or whatever one wants to call them.
This dispenses with essence and takes you right back to the real pathology
that is represented by each remedy. But much of the time we don¹t need to
remember it all because it is all laid out for us in the reps and MM¹s.

If a prominent part of a remedy picture is missing in a case but there are
so many other sx present that pertain to that remedy then that remedy has
to be in the running to consider. I don¹t think there is anything magical or
mysterious about this ­ you can have a Pulsatilla without amenorrhea or
weepiness; an Aurum without suicide; an Arsenicum without diarrhoea etc etc.

Maybe the faltering comes from the dichotomy of whether to fit the rx to the
person or the person to the remedy.

Interpretation shouldn¹t really come into it ­ stick to the facts of the
case. Keep it simple, keep an open mind, consult as many MM¹s as possible
and always read the small print.
