Re: Soothing an aggravation
Dear Toni,
As Shannon wrote it is said that both lower and higher potencies can soothe the aggravation of a remedy. I have not had experience with this but a friend told me that he has seen antidoting with a dose of the same remedy solution succussed 2-3 times more than the previous dose. It means that if you succuss the remedy solution the potency slightly changes and then it is a different potency and can antidote the previous one.
And some physics. As Dr Rozencwajg wrote we can think of a remedy as a wave signal. A signal is made up of many sinusoidal waves with different frequencies. If you write the Fourier series of a mathematical function you see that it can be expressed as a summation of many (infinite) sinus functions with different frequencies and amplitudes. I think the combination of these frequencies and their amplitudes determines the type of remedy, being Phos or Sulph or Lach. But different potencies of the same remedy may have the same frequencies but with with different amplitudes. I mean the stress on some frequencies may be more. This might be the reason for what we call "deeper actions". But in physics terms what makes a wave "strong", or more intense, is the amplitude of a wave which I believe is determined mostly by the dose not potency. It is a fact that we can reduce aggravations or even prevent them by using low doses of any potency we choose.
You wrote: "If dose size is the real issue with regard to aggravations, then why use a different potency to calm one? Also, if a too-large dose is responsible for an aggravation, might a small dose in the same potency ameliorate, or will it merely add to the already excessive energy?"
As you know if we give crude Arsenicum to the one poisoned by Arsenicum his problem will aggravate. The law of homeopathy is to give a remedy similar to the patient's condition not exactly equal. If you put a burnt hand in fire it will be damaged, not healed, because it is exactly equal. But if you put it in warm water it will be benefited very much. It is still strange to me and I can't understand the whole phenomenon well but it is a fact. This is also the case with the antidoting of a remedy with exactly the same remedy. You have to alter the potency otherwise you will aggravate the condition.
Regards,
Feras

Re: Soothing an aggravation
Just as a passing comment - I have seen the same potency of a remedy
repeated, antidote the first dose.
This is especially interesting regarding the other discussion on giving
more than one dose as a 'single' dose.
I can remember more than one occasion when starting out seeing a
second dose sto the action of the first -patient reports I was starting
to feel great after the first dose but went back to howe I was after
the second
I have seen this with the 200 potency and the 12. Im sure therefore
that it can also happen with the others
So (waffling on) I cannot concur with the many dose as single dose
approach.
As far as aggs go, I have never seen a repeated dose of the same
potency cancel an agg ( presumably as the body is responding too
strongly) Also I have noticed that once an agg has started and if it is
bad enough to warrent antidoting, then a lower potency of the same Rx
acts too slowly. It only appears to work if given in anticipation of
an agg, i.e. sooner than the arrival of the agg
the only effective way of antidoting an agg that ~I have seen is to
give a Rx according to the Sx that need antioidoting. (often one of
the Rxs listed under antidotes in the MM)

I agree with what Feras wrote and I also think this might have something to
do with finding the optimum potency for each case, i.e. simillumum potency
and just by changing the potency and finding the correct one the case
settles down.

*Not* antidoted!!!
In my experience (consistent with what I've been taught) the lower potency
*only* moderates, and the higher potency continues to act very well, for
just as long as would have been expected otherwise.
I have heard of antidoting (completely stopping the action of) a mistaken
high potency dose by giving one potency off--e.g. to antidote a 200c, give
199c or 201c. (Never tried it, since I have never found a need to antidote
a remedy, tho the "moderating" trick has come in handy.)

Re: Soothing an aggravation
Hi Feras,
Do you really mean "antidote", to completely stop the action of the remedy?
or do you mean to moderate its overaction/calm aggravation?
Thanks,
Shannon

Hi Simon,
I've used this approach (12c to moderate agg caused by a 200c) only once,
but in that case it did work--not fabulously well, but well enough to pass.
The relief of the 12 wasn't slow; it didn't *stop* the unpleasant symptoms
(asthma), but cut them back to manageable level within a few minutes, is my
memory. He used the 12 "as needed", when breathing was getting too
difficult, and he said it worked out to about once a day for the first week
or so, then less, then after two weeks the asthma was gone and he felt
great! (In other words that dose of 200c had *not* been antidoted, just
just "moderated".)
FWIW!

As far as I remember it was "moderated" not "antidoted".

Re: Soothing an aggravation
Dear group
I was taught [by a teacher who learned it from G. Vithoulkas] that this "trick" is meant to bring the potency down from the "higher" mental/emotional spheres to the "lower" physical ones. If somebody of the list can clarify or explain this further - I will be glad to learn.
Best regards

Re: Soothing an aggravation
Someone on another list recently said something similar: That since
most aggravations occur at the physical level (though I've seen
clear emotional involvement as well), the lower potencies are in a
position to deal with the physical symptoms that emerge as a result
of the aggravation.
