Well then Magda, double standards to boot - why did you then send this long
post to Minutus and not personally to Shannon as it is full of your own
opinions about sniping and what we should be discussing and nothing to do
with homeopathy, whether classical or not.

If all the 1000 + members now give their opinion what do we do about that?

I am sure someone out there has some homeopathy to discuss :-)

Excuse me if I offended you Joy. I answered thru the list because Shannon

Hi Magda,

I guess we're in agreement as to the main focus of the list! It sounds as
tho some of us view "main focus" in a somewhat looser way than you do, and I
don't think there's any problem with that. There is a difference between
your list and this one -- yours is *yours*, and you have chosen to moderate
it closely and hew tightly to the subject matter. Great! This list is
Ardavan's, and he has chosen *not* to moderate it tightly, and that does
sometimes cause problems...

Personally I (and many others) have no objection to sticking (rather) tighly
to the topic. So far as I'm remembering of what's been talked about lately,
I am probably unenthusiastic about roughly the same posts that you are.

But what to do? It's an open list, with a wide variety of folks. What do
you suggest should be done differently?

Again, this is your choice and your right as the owner/moderator. But on
this list the situation is a bit different.

Yes, that's our preferred method here too.
Then we need to speak up -- in a constructive way.
...

That was the "prologue", but it was *NOT* what the flap was about. IMO the
discussion on internet treatment was a useful one...
Ah yes, when he replied further with the one that started:

Ah, don't you love it when someone says, "Nothing personal" and proceeds to
attack your person? :-)

Yeah, she overreacted bigtime, and it didn't help her case any, but that's
not the point, IMO. Should she have been taken off the list? Maybe, but
I'd have thought it preferrable to just deal with the issues that her posts
brought up -- as happened, e.g., with the very good discussion re internet
prescribing.
I 100% agree. I wish I could say she's the only person who's ever carried
on so unprofessionally on the list, but (sigh) it would be a lie. Tho I
*would* have to say it's the most colorful language I recall seeing here!

But was she dealt with properly? I think not. I've been hoping we could
learn something from the episode and decide on appropriate responses for the
future, but maybe that's asking too much.
Yes, thankyou Dave! (There have been times in the past when he *did*
respond in that way, so I am not hopeful and happy that we Earthlings do
after all have the capacity to change and learn and grow (big smile). I did
not like what he was doing to Alva, but I *do* acknowledge that prior to
this his recent posts have been well-thought-out, professional, appropriate
and welcome. (This sounds condescending and truly I don't mean it that
way... We're just kind of plumbing the obvious here.)

...

No, it certainly doesn't. However, thanks for agreeing that he "maybe
should have dropped the subject and he did not". It's a start.

...

Of course. She exacerbated a bad situation.

...
Magda:

You are making excuses. I am not defending Alva's bad language nor her
skill with homeopathy, I am only objecting to Dave's treatment, and
appalled at the idea that it can be defended on such bases as the nature of
her replies and her level of skill. At risk of sounding like a kali-c, some
things are right, and some things are not right. What's not right to do to
someone you like and agree with, is *equally* not right to do to someone you
don't like or don't agree with. Granted it is *easier* to be fair and
judicious and thoughtful and kind with people that we like and agree with,
but that's not a great way to run a world, or to build community.

Magda:

Well... *I* found his post awfully offensive, so I'm not surprised that she
did too. But again, I'm not defending her response. I'm equally not
willing to say that her response made the rest of what followed okay.
Shannon:
Magda:

Okay, you have my attention! :-) Why do you not want to bring it to the
list? I think it's an important topic, and so far one that we don't seem to
be able to take steps on.

Which I guess is okay, because at this point "we" as a community still have
some, er, communication problems, such that any attempt to "define
homeopathy" would probably play out a whole lot like the Dave/Alva exchange
did, and that would be a huge tragedy. We NEED to get beyond this!
Yes, all of this is a real problem. How do you see developments such as
Scholten's, Mangialavore's, Sankharan's, etc., along this spectrum? To *my*
mind the big issue is that these folks are all well-grounded in the
Hahnemannian approach, and are *adding* to it rather than tossing it aside.
But still, they are applying methods that are new. Are they "classical", or
not? Should those methods be "allowed in", or not? What do you think?
Mm, I haven't seen any shoving down of throats... Everyone is free to
choose what they do. IMO *education* is the key, and that is what this list
is for.
No argument. Again, I am not defending her or her practice, only objecting
to her treatment.

You have more good points for discussion, but I have to go for a while.
Maybe I'll be able to look farther, later on .

Best wishes,
Shannon

Hi Joy,

Y'know actually, I think that some of the points she raises are important
ones, re defining ourselves as a community, and the need to do so in order
to protect ourselves (as individuals and as a community) from unpleasant
things that are afoot. If you can read far enough into my response, I'll be
interested in your thoughts!

I was trying to say that all the members on this list will have important
points to make about this episode but ironically this would be an indulgence
into what we are sort of trying to eliminate, i.e. extremely off topic
discussions. I am perpetuating this by sending this post to the group and
not to you privately, so the irony continues and there is a need to get back
to homeopathy now imho.

I don't think we do need to define ourselves as a community - this is just a
serious minded discussion list and although the following comment will make
Dave want to re-assemble all the heads in the sand - I don't think we can
make big mind changes to some people on this list. To do that would entail
far more than email slanging matches or email intellectual matches. Real
action out in the big wide world is what really matters. I don't think we
need to protect ourselves either, not as a community or as a discussion
list. Minutus does carry the disclaimer and maybe that should be enlarged on
but that is a very grey legal area. Personal protection is another matter
which each one of us has to decide upon. I have received dreadful private
emails since I have been on this list but I have also received beautiful
ones - so we trash the bad and smile at the good.

The rest of it is up to the list owner as I see it. Having once been on a
heavily clamping list, one which clamped a discussion that WAS about
Homeopathy, I soon left as I have no interest in that level of ethic (sic)
cleansing. I have generally been of the opinion that Minutus was one of the
best and I am sure it will continue to be so (except for the slanging
matches which I think should take place privately). But at the same time I
think challenges should be made when one of us wants to know why someone
else has deviated from what we term classical homeopathy, a term that is
becoming looser and looser it would seem. However there is a big difference
between challenging and 'policing' which some members have resorted to on
previous occasions.

This possibly doesn't answer all the points you made earlier but it is all I
have time to offer at the moment.

Best wishes, Joy

Hi Joy,

I agree and am done (again). :-)
Just to clarify re my issue of "protection", I was referring to a rather
threatening set of circumstances that's maybe more peculiar to the US? I
continue to feel that we (at least in the US) *do* need to define and
protect our boundaries and community, but you're right, it's "in the real
world" that it needs to happen, so maybe this isn't the place.

Best,
Shannon

I agree. Hahnemann was in many ways a messenger as much as an inventor. But
remember, even he stated that H may not work well when the vital force is
low.
Translate that in today's knowledge arsenal to chronic fatigue (stage 4 HPA
axis exhaustion), free radicle attack on gene groups and compounding
systemic superinfection caused by antibiotic resistant species infiltrating
extremities. Come on people. We can't live in the past - the best we can do
is learn from history and apply it to our today issues.
I am sure that if Hahnemann were alive today, he would be grappling with
these issues just as enthusiastically and originally and honestly as he did
the issues of his day. And don't forget, he shocked the medical
establishment then, too, just as the thought of expanding your thinking
shocks the establishment homoeopaths today.
Lighten up, go with the flow and use all the weapons in the natural
medicinal arsenal to beenefit the most important person in the equation -
the client.

Final comment - The issue exploded over the tendency of one or more members
to advocate and apparently use a "this remedy for that disease" approach to
treating patients and to give advice to others on the list to do the same.
This is clearly in contravention of the rules of homeopathy - PERIOD - not
to mention just classical homeopathy. The foregoing (non-homeopathic
methodologies), as stated, was the issue, not whether or not one can throw
an occasional tidbit of some other form of therapy onto the list. I have
posted many, many "tidbits" myself and will continue to do so. Almost
everyone on this list uses and/or is acquainted with a variety of
methodologies which they use more or less and in varying degrees and, almost
everyone benefits from hearing about them in abbreviated form from time to
time. The one and only issue is NOT to embarrass and, ultimately, DESTROY
this list by posting and advocating nonsensical methodologies and practices
under the pretense of such methodologies and practices being in any way
related to homeopathy. That is easy to understand - at least to me. Why is
that so controversial and why can't so many list members seem to understand
that THAT AND ONLY THAT is the issue here? Stay focused, list members. It
will require discipline and mental strength but, it can be done. If you have
difficulty in focusing and staying on point, now may be a good time to
begin, as dedicated and FOCUSED homeopaths are needed in this world, now,
more than ever.

PS - Let me be so bold as to suggest one more thing as Julian is not here to
do so, it seems. This has been said a thousand times in a thousand different
ways but, everyone, please edit your posts before sending them to the list.
It is not necessary to send the entire history of a thread to the list when
replying to a previous post. Just leave enough of the previous post so that
people can understand what your comments are referring to and clip the rest.
I am leaving the entirety of what came with the last post just to show how
long these things are starting to get. I could have clipped the post
previous to this one after the second paragraph in the August 27 e-mail
found below (this one):
and everyone would have understood perfectly what this was all about.
