Dear Friends,

My mum is 85. 13 yrs ago was Dx Rh Arthritis and was given cortisone injections for two years. For the last 3-4 months her pains in the back, hips, thighs and feet have become unbearable. March 2003 x-ray and BMD confirm Osteoporosis 65%, with an old L1 compression fracture. Now, she is unable to walk due to numbness and pain upon rising and walking.
I have been giving her various homoeopathic medicines for the last several years. These have, perhaps, prevented fast deterioration. The last remedy given today was Agaricus CM one dose. Your advice as to any specific remedy in this condition will be appreciated. The rubrics selected are:

Hi Lachhman,

I have read of wonderful effects of potentized Vermiculite on osteoporosis
(particularly the 6x potency?); however, I gave up (we started other things)
before I managed to get hold of any. I got a few suggestions I hadn't yet
followed up on, but they're on my other computer which is presently (again)
brain damaged, argh... Maybe someone here can re-post a source?

Calc-fl (again in low potency, perhaps 6x again) is another that someone had
seen good results with in several patients.

Could you combine some of the clearly overlapping rubrics? Basically, you have someone who's forgetful, even possibly a bit demented, who has osteoporosis and rheumatic pain, < walking. One remedy ( among others, of course) you might find interesting to read up on is Strontium -met.

Calc Phos Tissue salts won't do any harm and may even improve or stabilise the condition

Please have look at the Mg in take in the diet. You need Mg for Ca to be
able to be in balance.

Lectures, Radar, as well as clinical practice.

Homeopathic Remedies can help the body utilize the nutritional elements of
vitamins and minerals more efficiently. Weight bearing exercise, a good diet and
nutritional supplements are needed. The remedies may not reverse existing
bone loss but they can help prevent further loss by bringing the body back into
balance.
Constitutional care is best. Some remedies to consider are:

Calc Carb: (Calcium Carbonate from the inside of an oyster shell) Calcium
metabolism is poor, leading to poor quality bones or osteoporosis. There may be a
tendency toward curvature of the upper spine as a result of weak muscle tone.
There are recurrent cramps in calf muscles, especially at night. Joints are
red hot, swollen and develop gouty or nodular outgrowths. (7)

Arthritis, either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Pains worse cold
damp, exertion, hanging down. Fibrositis. Arthritis mainly affecting the knees.
Arthritic nodosities. Weakness of the limbs, especially weakness of the legs
from ascending. Cramping of the thigh, calves, foot muscles, especially in bed
at night, and also when stretching and straining.

Sprains linger or become chronic; repeated sprains of the ankles. Weakness of
muscles. Bunions.

Cold, clammy extremities. Cold clammy feet and handshake. Cold feet in bed as
night, must wear socks to bed. Later the feet warm up and become too hot
requiring removal of the socks then finally uncovering of the feet.

Nails distorted, brittle and break or peel easily. (13) Back Pain worse cold
damp, swollen joints with a sense of weakness and fatigue. Worse exertion,
stress.

Calcarea Phosphorica: (Phosphate of Lime. Tricalcic Phosphate.Ca3 2PO4.)
Rheumatic pain and stiffness of neck with dullness of head; from slight draught of
air.

Cramp-like pain in neck first one side then the other (right to left).
Throbbing or jerking pains below scapula. Violent pain in region of back when making
the least effort.

Backache and uterine pains. Sharp pains in sacrum and coccyx. Soreness as if
separate in sacroiliac synchondrosis.

Curvature of the spine to the left; lumbar vertebra bend to the left; spina
bifida. (4)

Those who need this remedy often experience Stiffness, soreness, and weakness
of the bones and joints. Aching in the bones of the neck, upper back, and
hips can be distressing. Deep tiredness frequently is felt, especially after
exercise.

Calcium deposits and bone-spurs may develop, even while general bone-loss is
taking place, and fractures may be slow to heal. A feeling of dissatisfaction
and a strong desire for travel or; “a change of circumstances” are often
seen.

Phosphorous: (Phosphorous) Bones may be weaker than normal. In childhood
there may have been late closing of the fontanels. Bones may also be slow to heal
after injuries and fractures. Burning pains between the shoulder blades with
a weakness felt in the spine

Silicea: (Flint) Defects of bone, spine, hair, nails, teeth, from poor
metabolism of minerals. Scoliosis. Spinal curvatures, calcifications and defects.
Coccygodynia. (13) They have a refined or delicate appearance, and often have
weakness in the spine. She has a low resistance to infections and injuries may
be slow to heal.

Symphytum: (Comfrey) Fractures often occur from mild trauma. This remedy can
be useful for strengthening and healing bones when new fractures occur, and
also helpful when pain persists in old, healed fractures.(21)

Her latest bone density scan is "all over the place," which has her doctors bewildered. I don't know what test was used but the values were:
AP lumbar spine 2.8
Proximal femur 0.5
Femoral neck 0.1
She's wondering now how accurate the test is, because last month she had a bad fall off a galloping horse, a fall that included several bounces on the ground with landings on hip and shoulder -- and no injuries! Nothing was torn, nothing was broken, and there was little bruising (attributable to her taking Arnica prophylactically because she's resumed riding fairly recently).
We both thought that was pretty good testimony as to the soundness of her bones, but I'm wondering if there is something further we should be doing? She takes a Metagenics calcium supplement, additional magnesium, and I suggested Vit. D3, since her D levels were low.

Very variable, low and high and in-between numbers.
Depends on the specific one used.
Also it can be spoiled by magnesium supplements as magnesium shows up
bright white (as does bone).
