*Maybe* that is true of the oil -- I don't know anything about it -- but it's certainly not true with tablets. But with tablets, the effects of overdose are prompt, mild, and short-lived -- you could get an excessive "loosening of the bowels."
(I also used to find that if I took too high a proportion of magnesium compared with my calcium supplement, I would feel *more* restless and antsy, until I took a little more calcium to bring it back into balance. That still seems weird to me, and I'm guessing it's not a common problem, but I don't know.)
The usual dosages for magnesium are anywhere from 400 mg to 1,000 mg per day, depending in part on how depleted the person's adrenals are (the adrenals are responsible for recycling magnesium, as well as sodium, and I suppose other minerals as well). Adrenal stress leads to a higher need for magnesium (and sodium, and other things as well).
