Thank you Ginny - what about persistent short cough?could that be a symptom?

The test discovers microfilaria - the "baby" stage of their lives. What causes symptoms you can see are the adults having taken up residence in the heart. Many dogs can harbor adults in small numbers, but a large infestation causes weakness, lassitude and shortness of breath, and it's then that rate at which the worms die off can be the main issue.

Many folks who do not use preventives test every six months for microfilaria.

Yes, it could. We're talking really persistent here, over weeks and months, not just a "kennel cough".

or any other blood vessel.
There is no preference for the heart but it is more dangerous if they are there - they name it heartworm as it can stop the heart if it clutters it up.
