The ones for which no long lasting antibodies are *naturally* produced - include HIV, TB, FIP and some others - generally those that hide out in the body for a long time. So Lyme is likely this way.
Antibodies CAN be naturally produced with these illnesses, but only DURING an actual infection. After the infection goes, the antibodies are gone. This leaves the individual JUST as susceptible to reinfection as before.

So this is likely why Maria's antibodies are high - she HAS THE INFECTION but her system is fighting it effectively.
Not sure about that one. HIV, and several others (eg TB, mycobacteria, FIP) live in the macrophage blood cells. Feline Herpes lives in the brain, so it can detect stress, and emerge to cause trouble during stress. Each virus has its own mechanism. Macrophages are the most primitive immune system blood cells, and are in charge of the rest of the immune system blood cells which they commandeer with chemical messaging between cells. They are also supposed to phagocytose (engulf) foreign particles and "take out the garbage" - which they conveniently fail to do in HIV and other diseases that misuse macrophages.
[By the way, do not fall for the story to use a vaccine for this kind of virus. ANY virus against which the body cannot SELF-vaccinate (and make longterm antibodies, not just during infection) also CANNOT induce artificial antibody defense or so-called "immunity". Some vaccines are made and sold, and they may be supposedly "safe" - but that does not make them efficatious.]
Lyme has its own mechanism. It stays in the blood serum, where normally a foreign spirochete particle (extremely small, spiral shape bacteria) would be tossed out or destroyed by a combination of complement cascade with antibodies. Lyme has a hiding technique so that the immune system does not "see" it . It has borrelial proteins called CRASPs (complement regulator-acquiring surface proteins), that enable it to hide from complement which otherwise would trigger their destruction. Those patients who beat it, DO develop a specific way to *combine* their antibodies with a complement visibility protein (lytic complement complex such as OspC) so that the immune system gets rid of it. There are twelve separate borrelial antigens for twelve proteins used by borrelia, and recovery from lyme happens only if *all* the lyme is detected and zapped.
SO it may not be a lifetime thing, depending whether the host can get rid of ALL the hiding little critters.
Active antibody - as Maria described, is evidence of getting rid of them by antibody-complement complexes that lyse (break up) the spirochete.
