Re: News about drinking Sodas
A false approach..... one needs to understand how type 2 diabetes works:
Whenever taste buds detect sweetness as a taste (regardless whether from actual sugar or an artificial one) there is a feedback loop to tell the pancreas to secrete insulin in preparation for sugar handling.
The problem with artificial sweeteners is that there is no sugar - so the body is producing insulin for nothing and THAT is what leads to insulin resistance - and Type-2 diabetes.
SO it is a myth that artificial sweeteners are a good idea in type 2 diabetes - they are just the opposite.
By the way, the drug companies making them knew this before they were approved for use in "diabetic" drinks, but hid the research from the official channels of approval.
SO if one is diabetic it is MUCH better to use real sugar than any artificial sweetener, in order to do least diabetic harm.
Of course some reduction in sugar is a good plan - there's no sugar pot or stevia etc in my house, as I find there's plenty of sweetness in the occasional fruit. And herb teas and latte do not need sweetening either.
When I make the occasional teff muffin, I use plum puree as sweetener.
Namaste,
Irene

Re: News about drinking Sodas
Here's the thing people. Coming from someone who is completely and totally addicted to the way soda feels in my mouth and going down my throat. I think its a sensory issue. It is the only thing that wakes me up in the morning. The sensation driven through the roof of my mouth to the top of my brain is the thing I love.
How about a remedy for those of us who have repeatedly quit and pick it back up because we simply can't wake up without it? Seriously I hate how much I love it. I know how bad it is for me. I can't stop my one a day habit of Diet Pepsi (my personal drug of choice.)
katy Mc RN homeopathic patient currently on constitutional remedy I think it's Nat Mur...

Hi Katy!
So plain ol' fizzy water doesn't do it for you? If not, then it isn't just sensory, or at least not just about the fizz.
I read that aspartame is addictive, maybe that's your drug, do you know?

I too love that sensation
but aspartame - I do NOT want that as in Diet Pepsi - even in 1 a day.

Re: News about drinking Sodas
My body reacts to maple syrup as a toxin, not diet soda (w/o aspartame)

That's exactly how I feel, part of it is sensory, like a cigarette smoker may like the feel of it in their mouth, drawing in the smoke, etc. besides the nicoitine addiction. Also, I feel much better after I belch!
Personally, I don't care for Diet Pepsi, only Diet Coke. Many times I just drink seltzer with only natural flavor, no artificial anything. I like a stong fizz, the SodaStream machine has 3 levels of carbonation adjustment. I also drink lots of green, black, white and oolong tea but this week report was on news that too much tea can kill you!
Originally Coca Cola had cocaine in it which made it addiciting. They still say it is a "secret" formula possibly they don't have to disclose everything because it has been around before FDA labeling laws.
I don't see any need to apologize. Surely many here are eating foods with refined sugar, flours, grains. While they may not have any immediate negative noticeable effects, years later all that refined sugar may contribute to disease. And how many are eating "heatlhy" brown rice which turns out can have very high arsenic levels while white rice has less since it is refined. .Now it's being recommended not to use too much baby food made from brown rice.
So, no matter how hard we try, today's food and agriculture system is bound to thwart us in ways we don't even know yet.

Stevia is an herb and can have problems, like any herb, from overuse.
Here, some research suggests a component of stevia is carcinogenic, another says causes fertility problems.
Natural doesn't mean exclusively safe.
