A few responses:

Lora, Thank you. I was aware of the herbal use of Urtica Urens for BPH, but most herbal texts warn of it's use in patient over 65, and suggest Sabal as the preferred herb after 65.

Susan, Thank you. Both Petroselinum and Cantharis have such strong 'additional' indicators that I had them low on the list – they would seem to be indicated when additional symptoms are more prominent. I will put them back in the reading list.

General: I don't think this case is an issue of 'disease state'. The most recent statistics I could find indicated that more than 85% of men over 65 have some degree of prostate enlargement with some low level symptoms. This would indicate to me that it is an issue of gravity as the maintaining cause and aging tissue and perhaps normal hormone changes as the general mechanism. The urethra's physical position leads to the urinary symptoms. So looking at proving symptoms – most that I find seem to be involved with disease states – burning, itching, pressure, discharge, inappropriate urging, etc. In those cases, matching symptoms to provings is the more straightforward process. However in the case of the normal aging process and gravity – perhaps it is more clinical experience that will point the way to the most effective options. Jeff – is this the basis of your suggestion of Baryta Carb? If so, how do you suggest the potency and dosing of a remedy as an age 'tonic'? If we are considering remedies as 'tonics' to aging issues – would it be better to look at cell salts?
Unfortunately, many of the obvious physical signs of aging that have to do with gravity and tissue structure are not going to respond to remedies (if they did plastic surgeons would be out of business ). However this is one case where the secondary effect (that of slowing or impeding the flow of urine – with the subsequent systems destruction) will have severe physical consequences, so it is important to try to provide real physical relief.

Thank you to all the on and off list responses – it seems many of us are working with prostate questions in our practices and I greatly appreciate your experiences and insights.

and I should add that if symptoms agree (should agree because of causation) we will select an anti HPV amongst the list, having I think, 11 remedies.

Dr Shahrdar's (owner of Minutus) work shows that many micro organisms are causal in acutes and the subsequent chronic diseases.
He had shown his work in Repertorium Virosum (unfortunately Hacked and about to be re-established).

The micro organisms may remain alive in the system - as per cases of post MMR gut problems and also shingles.
But in the same way that the micro organism for syphilis creates the syphilitic picture, about which Hn wrote extensively, all others are able to do the same and create their own pictures. This is the true meaning of miasm. It takes an expert to recognise such pictures. Dr Shahrdar's repertory is a great aid in this regard.

we don't treat or try to eliminate HPV which isn't really the cause anyway.
We treat the whole person and the whole symptom picture - not some so-called virus, which is not alive anyway.
