The criticisms of complexes in more chronic cases that i feel have a certain validity concern, firstly, the question of what to do next when symptoms are palliated but the patient can't manage without the medicine. If you are aiming at a deeper cure it would be quite hard to know where to go next. They are not usually delivered in a higher potency the same way a single remedy might be and it would be much harder to use remedy groupings and patterns as a guide. In the chronic cases i have observed where patients are very happy with their complexes ( quite a few people in fact) they have been prepared (and expected?) to be on them for very long periods, perhaps indefinitely.
The second point is a more debatable one that I think we do have to take seriously (I know it was one of Julian's main criticisms of formulas of all kinds). If something is unteachable or unreplicable it has much less value to the therapy. To say 'I do this combination approach and it works and that is all that matters' or 'this famous person said to do this and it works' is not as helpful to other homeopaths as being able to say ' this particular remedy has this sphere of action, and has been used on its own successfully in the following cases'. You do never know which aspect of a combination is most effective and therefore their use is not a learning/teaching experience of the same quality. And quality and consistency of teaching is important if a therapy is to know itseIf and be comfortable in its shoes. I agree with John (wow!) that people are not right just because of who they are and yet it is this sort of anecdotal stuff, repeated in awed quotation marks, that is the basis of a lot of informal complex prescribing.
I am aware that Reckewegs etc invest a lot of money in trials of their specific complexes and do have their own protocols and teaching programs but, that is not the same as an ad hoc made up combination intended ot cover all the bases.
The registration organisation that I am a member of differentiates between classical and complex homeopathy in its lists, expecting qualifications, and submitted cases in whichever you sign up for. For me that is not a bad solution.
In spite of the responses, which I have heard, I do still differentiate between acute and chronic in this.
Cheers

I have not seen Combos doing a lot of harm in chronics either...
In India there are homeopaths of all stripes.. with a lot of success by giving single remedy or combo remedies... I have seen marvelous results with combination remedies as well- mostly in several other homeopaths hands... single remedies are so very esthetically pleasing and precise... does not mean they are the only ones that are effective or could be used... Personally I think it is the vital force that cures and anything that aids it or even tips the scales in its favor would help or hasten the cure-
otherwise we do not have a rationale for the cures with Ayurveda, Siddha etc. and those with acupuncture...
