It is also possible to *prevent* (or treat - but prevention is
better) sore and cracked nipples by using Phytolacca cream
topically. It will also prevent mastitis which can be an issue when
nipples are cracked and bacteria can enter - after all milk is a
superfood for bacrteria.

Excellent advice Pauline and as I said in an earlier email it helped me when I used my forefinger and middle finger to press down either side of the nipple as I put the baby on as it helped to bring the nipple up for baby to latch on. I was laughed at by the consultant and told I would never be able to breast feed and was forced to give a bottle during 8 days in hospital (34 years ago - doesn't happen now!!) . When I got home I threw the bottles away and breast fed.
With my second I only went into hospital because they said I could have a 24 hour discharge (I threatened a home birth which was unheard of then) . I was given a bottle which I chucked down the sink and I breast fed without any difficulty.
