Call me lazy :-) but IMO some of the probiotic supplements are
great, and not necessarily milk-based. From what I read--and seems
consistent with my experience--yoghurt is nice for maintenance and as a
food, but for quickly and efficiently repopulating a stressed gut, it's
not potent enough. There might well be food sources that *are* potent
enough, but I don't know them. I've always used pills for the rare
circumstances where gut flora have been an issue. Candida; digestion;
ongoing fatigue--and diarrhea seems like it might be another--perhaps
the "good bacteria" will help her body to out-compete whatever's
causing the problem, *if* it's being caused by a bug. I'm partial to
the "broad spectrum" ones, that include *lots* of beasties, not just
acidophilus, tho that can work too. (It just doesn't seem very
"natural" to supply only one type, and I know that different ones of
the many beneficial bacteria play different roles, so why not
supplement as many of them as possible...)

But again, I wouldn't worry too much about it, so long as she is
*feeling* well. (If she starts to feel unwell that would be another
matter, of course.)

A lot of plump, fat or obese people do not have a well balanced diet!

Hi Mary,
I suggested Ginger when I saw her and the flat coke was only to keep hydrated while having the vomiting and diarrhoea- the phos ac in it is also excellent for keeping up the energy but this is not a problem with this girl. I will email and see how she has been today.

True - but with a lot of kids it is exercise they need and don't get!! She was only slightly plump- the way an 8 yr old can be. What I was trying to put over was she is not too skinny that it matters if she doesn't eat enough for a couple of days but her jeans were hanging on her!!

And sugar gives lots of frenetic energy, without any nutrition...her clothes hanging off her after only a few days doesn't sound good...eating disorders can be developed very quickly and at a very young age.
Healthy nutritious food and good exercise, as of course you're aware, is the way to help a young person.

I find it very interesting that a lot of misleading information seems to happen with both children and animals...when the carer/mum, has a perspective that they emphasize when one takes a case...the parent/carer dynamic needs to be looked at very carefully along with the obvious visible symptoms and the sometimes limited feedback from the patient...it certainly complicates matters, as if getting folk to open up wasn't difficult enough!

good luck with this,
best wishes
mary

I would never have imagined these as anti-diarrhea treatment!

To stop diarrhea:
=====
# bananas (yellow or plantains) fried or sauteed in ghee (or plain oil). Or just very ripe fresh bananas
plus
# yogurt
plus
# rice porridge- ie a handful of rice boiled in a litre of water for an hour till it becomes soft.
====

# very burnt toast with black tea is effective, esp in parasite like cryptosporidosis. Crypto is a parasite that can be aquired from swimming pools, bathing water, putting toys or other things in the mouth. In fact, consider it as a possible cause for your little girl.

Thanks for your diarrhoea treatments and I will add them to my list. They sound like what this mum calls BRAT - Bananas, rice,? and toast. The blackberries and cinnamon is from my herbal list.
