Have you considered Rhus-t?

Yes thank you - that too was one of the remedies she had overdone in her 'self prescribing' - in fact that was the one that she was using 5 or 6 times (multiple potencies) a day since it had previously worked well.
So I ask again of those of you who are suggesting remedies - do you consider it an appropriate route to give more of the same remedy someone has been overusing? My first thought was to avoid any of those she had been abusing and get her system to 'clear'. The most important first step however is to give her pain relief, so we can get to that stage. The suggestions for 'other' therapy such as accupuncture, or even a single dose of an allopathic 'inflammation' drug seems to be the 'shock to stop' approach. If I could suggest a good accupuncturist or reasonable MD, I would most definately suggest those therapies. My next thought would be a homeopathic remedy version of 'shock' on the order of sulphur or phosphorus.
Those of you who suggest re-using an already overused remedy - could you please elaborate on how and why you would suggest this - and how you would determine the potency necessary to overcome the current severe pain? This approach is outside my training or experience and I would appreciate learning more.

If it was my patient, I would recommend a visit to an osteopath I trust myself. This is because if there is a mechanical mis-alignment of the spine then no end of remedies is going to sort it because the maintaining cause is still there.
Once the spine has been physically manipulated, then you will find the selected remedy should show a response.
Rhus-t is of course < Rain. If you use it, I would suggest 200C
========
There is a gentle exercise which does relieve LOWER back pain:
Fold a blanket 3 times and put on the floor.
Lie on your back on the blanket.
Step 1- Gently raise your knees so that ultimately the soles of feet are on the floor.
Step 2 - Raise one knee up as far as it goes towards your chest. Stop as soon as pain becomes too much.
Return to position 1 and repeat 1 & 2 10 times.
Now repeat with the other leg.
Then repeat with both legs.
Use assistance from your arms if necessary.
Repeat 3 or 4 times a day.

Thank you,
If this were a case of mis-alignment I would not hesitate to suggest several other therapies, or indeed a few simple excercises such as you outline. Unfortunately this involves spinal fractures. She tells me her X-rays showed bits and pieces (not mis-alignment) and the specialists she consulted with recommended life long pain management therapy - no physical therapy (other than walking), and no surgery. While she reports no other pain you might expect to see in her age group (no arthritis in any joint), I am assuming the pain in the back is related to inflammation - aggrivated by weather - since she reported there were times when there was little or no pain. Also in the past she reports excellent relief from rhus tox. But after long term over use of homeopathic remedies - and current situation of extreme pain - I am reluctant to simply suggest the re-use of the same remedy.
I had previously suggested nutrition and a few supplements designed to aid in inflammation - and currently have no idea how much was implemented - it seems to be the recent weather patterns that have been more than she was able to handle at that moment.
I agree that due to a maintaining cause, this may not be a situation that can be 'sorted out' by homeopathic remedies, but I certainly hope that well chosen remedies in the future can help her live an active and healthy life with reduced (or even eliminated) pain. Her overuse of remedies is something I have not worked with - hence the inquiry to this group. I have worked with many cases of overuse of allopathics - but never overuse of homeopathics. Her intense pain at this moment is something that breaks my heart, and if left unaided will definately lead to her using allopathics. Again, my reason for calling on the expertise and experience of this group.
I thank you all for your help, support and suggestions.

If by bits and pieces you mean that there are loose bone fragments - which can cause major pain - have you then considered Symph?
Thinking simplistically, we need to secure the fragments to the main. Once they are secure, then there should hopefully be little or no pain.

if an osteopathis used, i would make sure that the person
is truly an energy worker. many do's do allopathic medicine
under their license and might put her on more drugs.
if available, low level laser works on controlling inflammation
very well and can be very healing and strengthening of the soft
tissue. i have found no harmfulness in this modality on either
people or animals that i have worked with.
my personal experience with confusing the vital force was very
personal and created by a trained homeopath who i, ultimately,
found to be abusive. he left me with such confused energy i
didn't know which way was up. it took about 1 yr of refusing
all remedies for my system to straighten out.

you might add that strengthening the abdominal muscles
will help to support the back.

or could the alternative be something like silicea to
have the body eject these bits and pieces? how big are they?
could moving them out of the body cause any other problems along
the way?

I agree, this and the several of the cell salts would normally be part of the consideration in a longer term approach to her care, depending on the actual physical situation in the spine. In your practice, would you initiate this type of case management into this current phase (the current level of remedy overload plus extreme pain)? I think in a theoretical situation I would look to comfort first, clear next, and proper case taking and remedy use after that point only - but this is not theory, it is an elderly lady in severe pain with a physical maintaining cause, remedy overload, more rain storms approaching, and the time line for aid and overall case management is not the same as a 30 year old.
At present I have not seen the X-rays and do not know if we are dealing with currently lose fragments or simply a sharp jumble. Since the rain is a major factor, I am taking the approach that inflammation is the key in pain initiation, re-occurance, and severity. This may be wrong - it is only a start point.
Under those circumstances, would you initiate a remedy such as symph immediately?

Hi Tania
As the bits and pieces are body's own, I do not think VF will eject them.
In a healthy system the bits of bone will be broken down and laid down else where.
