does other damage. (....at which point you will need careful homeopathy too)
Dear Irene,
The clinlcal significance in cases of severe poisonings or intoxications (e.g. chemotherapy) of the homeopathic Okoubaka aubrevillei (okou.):
“In another case a Leukaemia patient having received Okoubaka, suffered no side-effects following large doses of chemotherapy. Others lost hair, had severe inflammation of the gums and had to stay in quarantine for a long time. This clinic now uses Okoubaka to reduce the side-effects of chemotherapy in their cancer patients and patients no longer have to stay long in quarantine. “

Treatment in cancer

Dietmar Payrhuber, Austria

Cancer

In May 1994 Dietmar Payrhuber gave a well received and stimulating seminar in Berne discussing the possibilities of the treatment of cancer by homoeopathy. He outlines his experiences in treating cancer cases over many years.

The treatment of cancer has indeed a place in homoeopathy. Homoeopathy by itself is effective in a selected number of cases, while other cases indicate both allopathic and homoeopathic treatment. In these latter cases homoeopathy can also do a great deal to help the patient. An experienced homoeopathic doctor together with a tumor specialist should discuss the possibilities of treatment and find an optimal way to benefit the patient. This is what we wish for the future. There is a lot of anxiety and fear once the diagnosis of cancer is made, which leads to a kind of hopelessness. It is significant that this kind of fear and pessimism lies not only with the patient, but also with the doctors! There is a realistic fear in accordance to the situation, but beyond that (according to the theory of chronic diseases by Hahnemann) a fear and anxiety that is not realistic. It is a symptom of Psora (only to be understood by homoeopaths) and it shows the weakness of the patient (as well as the weakness of the doctor)!

The fear of the patient is indicative of a prognosis; it is a symptom of low energy in the mental sphere and of the whole organism. The fear in the doctor forces him to take into consideration all the possibilities modern tumor treatment can offer and leads to a overreaction of treatment wherein the patient is bombarded with 'heavy' therapies, not always to their benefit.

In homoeopathic literature we have too few cases of cured cancer. Eli Jones (New York ) and Compton Burnett (London) have exemplified many cured tumor and cancer cases and through their success have shown the possibilities of homoeopathic medicine. Even a part of today's homoeopathic world is suspicious of this success. Burnett gives insights on how he learned to treat the more difficult cases and it is interesting to see that he uses mainly low potencies and seldom high ones. Organic manifestations often need low potencies - this I can confirm from my experience.

In Burnett's theory many events and traumas must have occurred before cancer develops. These include physical traumas, infection, vaccination, the life-situation of the patient, all events that affect the constitution of the patient. He carefully selects one remedy after the other, describing treatment as a ladder which requires several remedies. In selecting the remedies he also insists on the theory of Hahnemann (Organon and Chronic Diseases). This is similar to the layer theory of G. Vithoulkas.

I was encouraged by my teacher Gerhard Resch, Vienna, to choose homoeopathy as the medicine for severe chronic cases and have done so for more than a decade. As an example of the tremendous possibilities of homoeopathy, I presented a case of Prostata-carcinoma which Resch cured with a low potency of Conium. The patient had widespread metastasis of the bones with severe pain, was in his last stages and had a very poor prognosis before homoeopathic treatment.

I also showed a case of a highly malignant Non-Hodgkin-Lymphoma which, even after extensive surgery and radiation spread upwards to the cervical region, but was cured with a low potency of Calcarea iodatum (see Compilation Links p. 32-33).

A case of M. Hodgkin and one of Lympho-proliferative syndrome in a child could hardly have had better results from radiation or chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation (which the patients respective parents refused) than with homoeopathy. Both are in a better general condition two years after treatment than prior to it. In one of these cases the specialists did not insist on radio- or chemotherapy anymore. The other with initially enlarged cervical lymph nodes and a very large spleen has periods when the lymph nodes and also the spleen are reduced to normal size.

Another case of Carcinoma of the thyroid-gland stopped growing immediately after homoeopathic treatment. The specialists had insisted on an operation but the patient refused. Seven years later the tumor is smaller in size and the patient is well.

In 'Tumors of the Breast Burnett points out::

"When I was a student and used to watch my professors paint tumour with iodine, give their bearers tonics, fail to do any real good, and then explain authoritatively how medicines were useless in tumours, and nothing but the surgeon's knife was of any real avail: when I used to see and listen to all this, I often dreamed of trying to find a solvent for tumours to avoid the cutting business, of which I have an instinctive horror. At the beginning of my professional career I tried hard and long to find such a solvent for tumours, but, of course, never found any.

And why? because it is impossible. Simply because the organism GROWS tumours vitally and anything that is to cure must affect the perverted VITALITY of the part that is normal. Fortunately the symptomatology of the sufferers, when read in the light of homoeopathy, give us a good guide in our search for the right remedies.

If we reflect upon the subject, we shall readily come to the conclusion that the attempt to cure tumours by locally-applied absorbents or by operations is like trying to cure an apple-tree of its apples by painting the apples with iodine, or performing an operation of the apple-tree for 'apples'. The only difference the two processes of apple-growing by apple-trees, and tumour-growing by human organisms, lies merely in the fact that the apple growing is a part of the normal biology of the apple plant, whereas the growth of tumours by the human body is morbid. This difference is, of course, a very big one, but what I am driving at is to show that tumour-growing is, though certainly morbid, yet nevertheless quite as much a vital process as if it were purely a biological process within the normal physiological life of the individual."

Combining allopathic and homoeopathic treatment.
A case of an Astrocytoma in the region of the thalamus and hypothalamus and the capsula interna. The localisation of this tumor belied operation, but a radioactive substance could be implanted. The implant probably destroyed the tumor, but didn't stop the convulsions and left the patient in a low general state. He was unable to concentrate in school and was in a weak, confused condition. Homoeopathic treatment stopped the convulsions, improved the quality of the patient’s life and he was able to stop cortisone. He was able to finish high school, earning his living by creating computer programs and to play handball at a league level. The tumor can no longer be detected in the CT scan. The remedies prescribed were Causticum and Radium bromatum.

Sometimes we cannot speak of a curative effect, but only of palliation in cases that need chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Taking into consideration the toxic effect of chemotherapy and the side effects of radiotherapy, remedies to help reduce the negative effects of these treatments can be considered (e.g. Radium bromatum, X-ray, Okubaka etc.). Again and again we find clear symptoms of Radium bromatum in patients who receive radiotherapy (important are the modalities: > warm bath, > motion etc.), sometimes symptoms of X-ray.

In another case a Leukaemia patient having received Okoubaka, suffered no side-effects following large doses of chemotherapy. Others lost hair, had severe inflammation of the gums and had to stay in quarantine for a long time. This clinic now uses Okoubaka to reduce the side-effects of chemotherapy in their cancer patients and patients no longer have to stay long in quarantine.

Homoeopathy was also used in a case of Non-Hodgkin-Lymphoma given only one month to live. This patient had a Non-Hodgkin-Lymphoma of the frontobasal region (3 x 2 x 2 cm) with metastasis in the ganglions. He underwent extensive radiation and chemotherapy and was given Radium bromatum 200 to reduce the negative effect of radiation. His apathy and confusion improved along with his depression (organic psychosyndrome). Due to his overall improvement he could tolerate more chemotherapy and did not die after the predicted month. Ten months later he started working again as a company manager and despite the fact that no deep working remedy could be found for him, the effect of the palliatively selected remedies has been highly remarkable.

Another patient with Ovarian carcinoma and wide-spread metastasis in the womb reacted well to a constitutional remedy (Calc-s) despite having palliative remedies, an operation, radiation and chemotherapy. One year later there was a tumor-recidive in the retroperitoneum, but an operation showed it to be benign! This 60 year old patient could not be held back from returning to her hard work on her farm.

Hahnemann pointed out that too much stress, psychic or physical, should be avoided in these severe cases. In my experience this is an important aspect to consider especially in cases where the remedies are not acting properly .

I like to quote again from the experiences of Burnett:

"I now know that this is not necessarily the case, but that a cure may be obtained even after an operation, and after a recurrence has begun. In the next place I again learnt, and continue to insist upon, the importance of dogged preseverance in the medicinal treatment. And finally, it confirms my general practice of striking out new therapeutic lines when the old ones do not suffice. É the course of the case taught me for the first time the vastly important lesson, that even after an operation we need not to give up hope, - more, that where an operation has been performed, constitutional treatment should be begun at once, to get at the root of the matter and prevent any further local expression of the disease."

Pain in cancer and tumors

Whether or not we can palliate the pain is very individual. Sometimes homoeopathy helps, sometimes not.

An example is a case of a woman 40 years old who suffered a great deal of pain with a very big tumor of the womb plus ascites. She had consulted homoeopaths for the last two years, but her constitutional remedy was not found. Silicea fittted all her symptoms and the mental characteristics. Silicea in LM-potency took away all her pain for months. But the tumor continued to grow very slowly and I became impatient and prescribed Lapis albus in low potency. From that moment the pain returned and could not be halted until the patient died.

Another case of a 60 year old woman with a tuberculinum constitution who was diagnosed with carcinoma of the lungs (two different histological types) with Pancoast-tumor. The patient had a clear Arsenicum picture, and Arsenicum brought relief for three months. Attempts from the family to help further (including medical advice, infusions etc.), brought the patient into a bad asthmatic state immediately. The patient never asked about her situation, nor did the family try to inform her because she was always so optimistic, yet at the same time anxious (tuberculinum miasma). She could not lie in bed during her last days but just sat in the arm-chair. She died of weakness, but never experienced pain or severe suffocation.

In an advanced case of colon carcinoma with wide spread metastasis, the constitutional remedy, Nitric acid in 30, later in 200 potency, brought great relief from severe pain for several weeks. An M-potency immediately brought on severe pain that made the patient want to jump out of the window. He cried because of pain. In this state C 30 brought relief within minutes. During the last weeks this painless state could not be reached again.

A female patient with colon carcinoma which had spread to the vagina and bladder found relief with Nitric acid and Sedum alpestre in low potency right up until one hour before death. For the final hour she had tremendous pain.

An 80-year old woman, after two operations for pancreas carcinoma and atresia of the alimentary-canal, received Plumbum 200 and Nux vom 30 in her last days before and during treatment in hospital. This reduced her pain and a prescription of Lycopodium 200 allowed her a two pain-free days before death.

These examples show that there is great scope for homoeopathic treatment in the cure and palliation therapy of cancer. I would suggest to consider the possibilities of homoeopathy in any case of cancer. Allopathic medicine and homoeopathy should work together to find an optimal way in each cancer case. The possibility to work with homoeopathy in cancer depends upon a certain level of homoeopathic skills and requires not only correct use of the remedies, but also correct potencies and a proper evaluation of the remedy action.

[see Clarke p. 1625; Boericke p. 543]

X-ray

Skin lesions. Distressing pain. Action is centrifugal, towards the periphery.

Affinity for lymphatic system and bone marrow. Anemia, leukemia. Psoriasis.

Stiff neck. Pain in muscles of neck, when lifting head from pillow.

Tongue dry and sore. Throat painfull on swallowing. Nausea.

Rheumatic pain. Palms dry and scaly. Fissures.

Worse in bed, afternoon, evening and night, open air.

[see Boericke p. 681]

Okoubaka aubrevillei

The remedy is made from the bark of a west african jungle tree. The native tribes used it as protection when they were invited and had to be suspicious of being poisoned by the other tribe.

It has not been entirely proven, yet one can bear it in mind in cases of severe intoxications (e.g. chemotherapy).

Many thanks for this information. Okoubaka aub. is a new remedy to me.
I work with clients long-distance and often am asked for advice in dire
poisonings. Availability of a remedy quickly can be an issue in such
cases - though for local ones of course one can plan to have the remedy
available. I much appreciate the details you sent.

Just for interest, one poisoning case where I suggested ascorbic acid
intravenously, involved a 4 month old kitten which had managed to get
hold of Tegretol tablets (carbamazapine epilepsy medication) of its
owner and consumed an unknown number/amount (several tablets were
unaccounted for) during the afternoon. The owner called me from the vet
clinic (in South Africa). The cat was collapsed, limp, cold, dying,
despite the vet's heroic measures, heat lamp and IV to try to "flush"
the drug. I suggested IV ascorbic acid which vets tend to have on hand
in SA fortunately and it indeed reversed the drama and the kitten went
home fine by morning - there were no after-effects, the kitten was
playing as if nothing had happened.
Ascorbic acid is useful in that one does not always know what
physiology will be affected by a toxin - often animals ingest poisons
with proprietary (hence unknown) ingredients for example, and Vit C is
not fussy - it antidotes any toxin as far as I can tell - so it can be a
lifesaver and is *usually* readily available. Speed is usually of the
essence and practicalities in an emergency poisoning might preclude a
good homeopathic remedy simply for the time needed to acquire it if it's
not locally available.
I'll look at all the recent info on the list on Okoubaka aubrevillei
however along with what you sent here - chemotherapy allows time to plan
and the reports look impressive.

Namaste,
Irene

Irene,
I agree, vitamin C is amazingly versatile!
How do you compute dosage for small animals, or is that something a vet
would tend to be familiar with anyway?

OKOUBAKA AUBREVILLEI

[274].

Okoubaka aubrevillei belongs to the family of Octonematacae.

It grows in Africa, of the West in Ghana and in Nigeria.

It is W. Schwabe. being asked by Magdalena Kunst, who has brought the stock and specially the bark of the tree.

The tree is 25 m. high and 3 m. wide.

This species is rather remarkable by the legends which surround it and that makes it a fetish, which many of the lvoirians refuse to cut and even to touch.

It is considered in the country Ahourea as a powerful protector that "will command to all the medicaments of the forest" Apiece of the hark worn on oneself, will preserve from accidents on the way; put in the house, it will keep away the spirits, the sorcerers and the thieves: the persons who have evil intentions who will approach to it will be immediately attacked with convulsions.

In lotions and bath.

The maceration of the bark is given as counter poison: as a drink, it will calm down the tachycardia as nasal instillations, the headaches will be cured: as vapour bath, the generalised oedemas. and as compresses it will cause to disappear the hematoma within 24 hrs.

In preliminary researches indicate the presence of saponosides in notable proportions in the leaves of these two species.

The hark of the trunk, of the roots of Okoubaka aubrevillei contain some traces of alcaloids.

All other researches are negative.

The stock is prepared in M.T. equal to D 1 by the Deutsche Homoopathische Union (D.H.U.) There does not exist any Hahnemannian pathogenesis of this remedy.

O.A. Julian describes a clinical pathogenesis based on the cases.

Thank you to all who have helped in finding information about this remedy. From all that has come forth it appears to be a wonderful remedy for my situation. Our development has used multiple herbicides/pesticides of late. After the last spraying - 13 dogs are ill and one is dead. Of course, since the dogs have a variety of symptoms - the conclusion of the office is that the spray had nothing to do with the illnesses. As a homeopath - I would certainly expect each individual to have different symptoms - but they are not open to any discussion. Overall, most of the sickened younger animals are having stomach problems (vomiting, diahrrea or a combination), the older and smaller (closer to the ground) are having lung problems (spasmodic coughing that hangs on for weeks), and as time progresses, more are showing small skin problems. It certainly appears that Okoubaka would be a good remedy to keep handy.
Now the problem is finding a supplier for this remedy. Thus far I can only find it in the UK. Does anyone know of an US supplier?
Also - since the MM available at present is rather slim - I would assume this remedy will be used at present only for 'first aid' situations - would you suggest MT, 6C or 30C as the best potency?
Again, Thank you to all.

This is also used as part of the Sanum remedies - microbiological isopaths. I studied it for autism spectrum issues (candida albicans/bacteria in the gut/heavy metals/severe food intolerance) prior to abandoning the idea of isopaths!
In this capacity it is used to treat food allergies, gut imbalances, bacteria, yeast - detoxifying the gastro-intestinal tract. It's based on the research of Dr. Gunther Enderlein who developed his isopaths from fungal cultures. It's intended to restore balance to the microflora in the body. Much of his theory was based on disease as a result of the manifestation of this imbalance to which he compared it to the psora miasm. He also described the Aspergillus cycle (paratuberculosis) as another miasm underlying much chronic illness.
There are several Sanum remedies (including Okoubaka) which are used together as a therapy for heavy metals, toxins, and metabolic wastes.
(Thus why I once considered its potential for spectrum disorders.)
Truly,
Erica
