Hi Simon,
I've just recently joined this list and was happy to
see a post on epilepsy. I'm not a homeopath, just a
Mum trying to find some answers for my 19 year old
son.

We have had him on the ketogenic diet with great
success but can't get rid of a cluster of early
morning seizures every 4th day. I did a homeopathic
workshop and purchased a kit with 42 basic remedies.

My son has no speech and is very developmentally
delayed so it has been trial and error really with the
remedies.

I have used Passiflora co. for sleep which has helped
a lot. Also Arsen alb when he gets very restless if he
knows a seizure is coming and nothing will stop him
pacing the house like a caged tiger! I also tried
Argent nit for the clusters (if I can get it into him
quick enough) and it has shortened the clusters
dramatically.

These are probably not traditional remedies for
epilepsy but I find a lot of his problem is fear of
the seizure coming. I have been to homeopaths in the
past but nothing prescribed seemed to work. I'm trying
to look at his whole picture and not just the
epilepsy.

Drugs only made his seizures worse (we tried them
all!) and the diet has been the only thing that has
helped. His seizures started after vaccination - he
was perfectly normal until 6 months of age.

I'm still learning and reading up on homeopathy, I
would appreciate any input.

Dear Andrea,
I think it is better to try some acute remedies,such as Stram or Bell,and as you mention that the trigger has been vaccination,consider his post vaccinose state too.

Although this is not homeopathic it may be worthy of investigation - Adenosine has been used in many of my patients with seizures and autism with some contributing help it seems

Stramonium is not a remedy that a lay homeopath should be trying out. The immediate results if there are any, might well be worse than the seizures which are at least a known, IMO. It has taken me years to begin to understand that you have to be able to cope with, know where to go with, the results your prescribing brings. Teresa, lay homeopath(Northern VA)

Hi Andrea,
It's really too bad you can't find a homeopath who can help you. Have you read Hercu's book Stramonium? I would not like to be a parent doing an epilepsy case on my own. Although I know homeopaths who got where they are from doing exactly that. Love is an amazing teacher.

I'm not against using a homeopath. We used a homeopath
years ago and because nothing changed, I went off it
and tried other things. I wish now that I had looked
into it more.
We are in a country area so don't have anyone here but
I could look in the city. I was hoping with my kit
that I could just give Matthew some relief, not so
much 'cure' the epilepsy.
I have read about Stramonium helping epilepsy (not
sure if it was the story you mentioned) but it is not
in my kit so probably best to see a homeopath for
that. I also read that Argent nit (also not in my kit)
has cured epilepsy. (?)

I do have Silicea and have not tried it but just read
about it and a lot of it sounds like Matthew. He also
developed a sore eye on the weekend - red and teary
but no pus. We have been washing it with weak salt
water. I gave some Belladona on Saturday as he had a
fever and was developing a cough. It helped but his
eye is still a bit red but much better. I just gave
the silicea as I thought that might help with that
also.

It is not the sort of thing that you can get with just a few symptoms. You have to build up a whole picture. Also, once the remedy starts working, the homeopath has to keep track of what it is doing and decide what the next step should be. You would have to see the homeopath more in the beginning, but as the case settled down, you could see him less. Most of the work could be done on the phone.
Because you have not used a lot of remedies or other suppressive medicines, you have a much better chance. Also, it helps that this has not been happening for a very long time and your son is young. You need a really good homeopath with a lot of experience. Preferrably someone with experience with children and these kinds of deep nerve/brain distubance. A long case record of just eplilepsy is not key. But someone who deals with deep distrubances and has plenty of experience. You may have to travel to get to that person, but compared to what your son is putting up with, that's not much.

I mentioned Herscu because he deals with sort of thing. Calling him and asking for a recommendation is possible. Stramonium is the name of a book that he wrote. It is probably not something that would be meaningful to you at this point.
Wish you the best of luck. Really search for a homeopath. Don't just look for someone convenient. It is an art and takes a lot of skill. Don't fuss about money. Find the best you can. There are plenty of good and committed people out there.
