Hi Peter
any application of Arnica in broken skin (eg Arnica gel, cream, or in a liquid form) is not to be used. I learned this at school, we were told that crystals form in the blood, unfortunately no reference was given.
I looked it up for you and I found:
1. Clarke "Arnica should NOT be used externally where there is broken skin. For torn and lacerated wounds Calendula must be used locally" pg 172 Indian edition.
2. CHOUDHURY H., 50 Millesimal Potency in Theory and Practice (cdh2) CHOUDHURY Harimohon
(We should be cautions about Arnica, as it is said that if Arnica is applied externally in open wounds, it may cause sepsis). this is from RADAR
This is all I could find. There was nothing even in Simon King's website . What I thought was a bit worrisome is that some combination gel (eg. Calendula, Arnica, Sulfur (?)) are sold to be used in open wounds. And Arnica gels to do come with warning label....
I hope this answers your question

Hi Lucy, everyone, just google it
here's one of the first examples from searching 'Arnica open wounds'
http://www.drugguide.com/monograph_libr ... arnica.htm
By the by if you look at the Skin Sx of Arnica in the MM we see it is
(from memory) for erysipelas and other serious skin conditions, so
bearing in mind that the potentised herb is often (not always)
applicable to the Sx caused by the MT one can imagine the havoc that
Arnica applied topically has the potential to cause in susceptible
peeps.
I am not sure whether the homeopathic Sx of arnica were gleaned from
provings or a combination of poisonings and provings, perhaps someone
of academic bent will supply that info?
kind regards

Yes, Goodle is great, but we always have to be critical as there is also a lot of "hot air" (to be polite) and not good information on the Internet. So being able to decide what is good info from what is not good is crucial. Still yes information is great, access to information is great but what we do with the info is important as it can just end up being a lot of "hot air", filling our disk drives for nothing

Hi Simon and all
Arnica, topically is an antiinflammatory, antiecchymotic, analgesic, antimicrobial
The reason it is advised not to be used on broken skin, is because of responses by some with damaged
skin ammounting to edematous dermatitis with the formation of pustules. Repeated use in these cases
was thought to potentially lead to eczema.
This is the herbal use of Arnica though and not the homoeopathic. And, often it only takes a few
reports to end up with a caution to not use a product in certain circumstances. Could be just like
the Comfrey bungle.
re whether proved or toxicology as source of our use homeopathically
Hahnemann used the root of the plant to prepare for his use. But, some provings were done with the
whole plant, containing flowers which contained insects, which lay their eggs inside the torus of
receptacles and so some symptoms were developed from the toxins of such grown insects. Hering
supposedly made comments about the toxic effects being from tincture made from the flowers
containing this arnica fly. The bug is called Atherix maculatus Meignen. Nearly all flowers in the
shops contain eggs, worms, or the excrements and other remains of the worms, or pupas; and all this
acts similarly to Cantharides. (all this gleaned from Banerji's Materia medica.)
So, some symptoms developed by provers which may be caused by this fly, may have been included in
the Materia Medicas of the time. This could be the source of skin irritation.
Being from the Compositae family, it could be interesting to see what similarities other members of
this family have with Arnica and its so called irritant properties. They may well be there whether
the fly has been included or not.
To be on the safe side, I always make sure that my Arnica is made from the root only.

Greetings.
Please have the person contact homeopath Dr. Suneta in Kampala tel. +25675886122.
You didn't mention if the wounds are remaining open due to infection (ie have been converted to tropical ulcers) or just in the process of damage done and are healing in their own way.
Since other Minutus writers have given effective accident advice, I'm going to consider the possibility of the wounds being infected and are ulcerating tropical-style.
Consider bathing/soaking the wound(s) in a hydrogen peroxide solution along with internal Ars.30 or Lach.30 Often, I found, this is the best way for infected open tropical wounds/ulcers. The H2O2 bath can be alternated or combined with calendula or better yet, ALOE as a PACK BANDAGE- which is readily available in Uganda. Other anti-septic things available in Uganda would be neem leaves or tumeric powder instead of calendula. Teetree may or may not be available in Uganda but is in Kenya and we can send it up immediately.
Aloe grows all over Uganda, is in many household gardens and also is marketed there. Just cut open a leaf and wrap it over the wound or squeeze the pulp over the wound. Does wonders. I've cleared many a dangerous wound with it.
My own phone number is below and you can ask the person to contact me if they can't get hold of Dr. Suneta. Uganda is only a day's bus ride away and we can send up medicines immediately.
Sincerely,
Didi Ananda Ruchira
