*High blood pressure *
Volumes have been written and stupendous research all over the world by
known medical systems have found various ways and means to combat this
malady but as to the causes of high blood pressure a definite answer still
eludes. The difficulty to find out a definite answer leads one to conclude
that one factor alone is not responsible for high blood pressure. Heredity,
personal traits, food habits, environment, age, overweight, stress, smoking,
Tea/coffee/Alcohol, certain occupations etc. are responsible for
hypertension. But a common factor lies through all these. That is the
changes these factors can bring on the receptor molecules and consequent
malfunctioning of the stable metabolism within the cells. This needs more
careful studies before a theory can be advanced.
Blood Pressure is the force the blood exerts on blood vessel walls and this
force is necessary for smooth circulation of the blood in the body. Outflow
of blood from the heart and resistance generated by the narrowing inner
circumference enable to maintain this pressure.
In a healthy individual normal blood pressure ranges from 95 to 150 mm Hg.
of systolic and 60 to 90 mm Hg. of diastolic depending on the age. *Any
variation beyond ± 10% is considered abnormal.* However, there are *
exceptions*, so much so that when the blood pressure is brought to this
normal limit from 220 systolic and 120 diastolic a patient of 48 years age
complained of nausea, sleeplessness, irritability and discomfort. Thinking
that it could be due to sudden changes caused, enough time was given to
achieve and equilibrium but the patient could not improve till his systolic
was allowed to go upto 180 and diastolic to 100. *Human body, in fact, is
designed to manage need based high blood pressure as encountered during
excitement, anger, sexual acts, etc. It will come back to normal without
medication within time limits.* If raised blood pressure remains
continuously for fairly long time and it does not come back without medical
interference, only then is the term 'hyper-tension' valid.
Hypertension is one of the major causes for coronary heart problems. Same
is the case with respect to infraction of brain (stroke). Effect of
hypertension on heart result in angina pectoris, cardiac breathlessness,
congestive failure and myocardial infarction.
Removing the causative factors, establishing a conducive environment and
homoeopathic interference can successfully bring the patients back to health
in a majority of these cases.
Symptoms should be studied with respect to age, modalities and influencing
factors. Inability or difficulty in climbing stairs, fainting on exertion,
sinking feeling, breathlessness, palpitation of the heart,
constrictive/oppressive feeling in chest, burning of palms and soles and
puffiness of face are to be noted. A good materia medica should be referred
to corroborate symptoms so that claudication, nephrosclerosis and
atherosclerosis could be gauged. Early warning symptoms if properly taken
care of can ward off possible calamities. Homoeo medicines to be studied
include Arsenic Album, Aurum Met., Avena Sativam, Bryonia, Gelsemium,
Glonine, Lachesis, Lycopus v., Sanguinaria, Spartin s., Spigelia, Veratrum
vir., etc.
