Hahnemann on Combos
With the great conscientiousness which should be shown in the restoration of a human life endangered by sickness more than in anything else, the Homeopath, if he would act in a manner worthy of his calling, should investigate first the whole state of the patient, the internal cause as far as it is remembered, and the cause of the continuance of the ailments his mode of life, his quality as to mind, soul and body, together with all his symptoms (see directions in Organon), and then he should carefully find out in the work on Chronic Diseases as well as in the work on Materia Medica Pura a remedy covering in similarity, as far as possible, all the moments, or at least the most striking and peculiar ones, with its own peculiar symptoms; and for this purpose he should not be satisfied with any of the existing repertories, - a carelessness only too frequent; for these books are only intended to give light hints as to one or another remedy that might be selected, but they can never dispense him from making the research at the first fountain heads.
He who does not take the trouble of treading this path in all critical and complicated diseases, and, indeed, with all patience and intelligence, but contents himself with the vague hints of the repertories in the choice of a remedy, and who thus quickly dispatches one patient after the other, does not deserve the honorable title of a genuine Homoopath, but is rather to be called a bungler, who on that account has continually to change his remedies until the patient loses patience; and as his ailments have of course only been aggravated he must leave this aggravator of diseases, whereby the art itself suffers discredit instead of the unworthy disciple of art.
The Chronic Diseases, their Peculiar Nature and their Homoopathic Cure.

16) What is a "combination remedy," and do you sell them?
A combination remedy is a mixture of several remedies, either of the same potency or of various ones, all in one tablet. Combination remedies are used to address specific conditions by using, all at once, a number of remedies that have a strong history of treating that condition. Hence, combination remedies are used like conventional drugs, treating specific conditions rather than the whole person, and therefore are not used according to strictly homeopathic principles. However for certain common conditions these combinations products can be useful. One should however, remember that these are "shortcuts" intended only for short term treatment of temporary mild conditions. For treatment of long term illness or more serious short term conditions you need to see a homeopath. Hahnemann Pharmacy does not sell combination remedies

Q. A lot of times health food stores have combinations that have 6 or 8 different remedies. Wouldn't that be better than a single remedy, since you would e sure to cover your bases?
A. Actually, no, because the remedies can cancel each other out. I would rather see people become familiar with the single remedies. For example, I've seen a combination for Grief that has one remedy, Pulsatilla, for people who are very clingy and needy of consolation, and another, Nat-mur., for people who just want to be left alone in their grief. How can one person possibly need both?

Pros & Cons of Homeopathic Combinations

Like any other form of medicine, homeopathic combinations have their pros and cons. Lets study them one-by-one. Pros * They are dead easy to prescribe. The homeopath does not have to use his brain at all! The homeopath does not have to worry about the content, remedy differentiation, case-taking, repertorisation, finding similimum, potency selection, repetition etc. Just pick the bottle with the name of a disease on it and there you go. * They can be picked off-the-shelf even by a lay person. * They may offer quick palliation in certain cases. * They provide for greater profits to homeopathic pharmaceutical companies and medicine-stores. Cons * They can never cure, as 'cure' with homeopathy needs lot of effort in case-taking, individualization, repertorization, remedy differentiation, potency selection etc. The homeopaths who presribe them simply forget the first aphorism of the Organon of Medicine - "The physician's high and only mission is to restore the sick to health, to cure as it is termed." And also the second aphorism - "The highest ideal of cure is rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of health, or removal and annihiliation of the disease in its whole extent, in the shortest, most reliable and most harmless way, on easily comprehensible principles." * They can at best palliate. Palliation may be OK in some acute diseases but in majority of chronic diseases, the prolonged use of such combinations would lead to suppression of the disease and subsequent complications. * Since the medicines are used in physiological doses, .

* They can at best palliate. Palliation may be OK in some acute diseases but in majority of chronic diseases, the prolonged use of such combinations would lead to suppression of the disease and subsequent complications.
* Since the medicines are used in physiological doses, their prolonged use would invariably cause medicinal symptoms (that means side-effects) to appear in a patient. When you take a combination with 8 different medicines, not all 8 would give good results. Probably only 1 or 2 would palliate in your case, the rest are being taken for no good .and they would actually cause harm ..just like anything unwanted in the body.
* The combinations are never proved as an entity. There is no drug-proving for any homeopathic combination. It is not known, exactly how the various medicines interact with each other and what is their combined effect. So when you take a combination, you are basically taking an untested medicine. Sounds comforting? Heh!
* Repetition problem - When a combination is given by a homeopath and the case stops responding after some initial relief, the homeopath is at loss as to exactly which medicine to prescribe now and which potency to use because he does not know exactly which medicine in the combination worked for a given patient.
* In my personal experience I have found that the patients who come to homeopaths after taking combinations for their chronic conditions are very difficult to cure, even with the similimum. I have found that allopathic suppressions are more easy to deal with than the homeopathic suppressions.

and from another homeopath on a list with me:
There's a simple reason combos were never an option - which is that they are incapable of invoking the Law of Similars. They are simply an unknown substance. It's not a problem that they are mixtures - it's a problem that they have unknown and unproven capacity to invoke the Law of Similars.
If you want a combo to become a homeopathic remedy you can do that - you just have to do a proving and document the activity areas for the mixture. Then you can give the mixture a new name, as a single homeopathic remedy.
The Law of Similars is a concept as basic as gravity - it is an ENERGY effect that has been observed since at least 400 BC on this planet. It's a law of nature - not something man invented. It is however invoked when the energy of disease (seen via symptoms of illness) is MATCHED to the energy of a remedy (seen via provings), and that seemingly magically.
THAT is homeopathy - THAT is energy healing!
THAT is the Law of SImilars by which homeopathy works.
What Hahnemann did, was to remove the potentially dangerous chemical molecules from the system, so as to have no side effects from the molecules/chemicals during this ENERGY healing. He also found that he could INCREASE the ENERGY of healing, by succussion. So Hahnemann did not discover the principle of healing via Law of Similars. Many others did that before him, Hippocrates for one. But Hahnemann found how to INCREASE the healing energy while removing the chemical components that can cause side effects.

Wouldn't that be better than a single remedy, since you would be sure to cover your bases?

* If you want a permanent cure, homeopathic combinations are not the way to go. * If you are suffering from a chronic disease condition, you should not use homeopathic combinations. You would end-up causing more harm than benefit in the long run. A temporary amelioration followed by suppression is often the norm in such cases. * If you can find a good homeopath, don't use a combination on your own. * If you are suffering from a skin disease, never use homeopathic combination ointments. * If you are a very sensitive person, the medicines in the combination can create side-effects or proving symptoms. * When you are pregnant.
