Re: The Guardian - Artificial sweeteners may promote diabetes
Soroush,
The research focused more on saccharin, which is hardly used now in most sugar free products in the USA and mainly in diet soda dispensed from fountains.
Study claims the sugar substitutes cause gut dysbiosis then predispose, causes diabetes.
While saccharin, aspartame, sucralose may alter gut flora, if that significantly causes diabetes, many who go on low carb, ketogenic, Atkins, etc. diets would become diabetic
Does this happen frequently??
Not studied was any benefit from taking probiotics with sugar subs, what refined carbs were eaten that promote dysbiosis, candida, yeast overgrowth.
Many food additives, preservatives, chemicals, etc. can cause gut dysbiosis.
Aspartame, a brain excitotoxin similar in effect to MSG, is said to be linked to Parkinson's and I get muscle aches and headaches when having used it.
Sucralose/Splenda has liver issues, I find it sometimes raises my blood sugar after use.
Using first cyclamates, then saccharin since the 70s, and still do albeit much less, those had no ill effect.
Only the 2nd generation sugar subs seem to be more problematic.
While now diabetic from inheritance, cyclamates and saccharin didn't cause diabetes due to gut dysbiosis since I've been using them for 30 years prior to becoming diabetic and was already pre-diabetic before ever using them.
One plus is more research is being done on gut flora, probiotics and relation to disease and homeopathy is already there with bowel nosodes.
It's not clear if your friend's diabetes due to aspartame was caused by it's possible gut dysbiosis effects or others.
Nor is it clear that taking probiotics and not using any artificial sugar substitures can reverse diabetes
Depends on individual susceptibilities, inherited weaknesses, etc. along with what foods are being consumed.

Study published in Nature, needs $ubs to read fully.

Re: The Guardian - Artificial sweeteners may promote diabetes
THis is true, and was proved many years ago by Professors Heller and Heller (married to each other after working in research together).
The mechanism is this:
Any sweet TASTE is perceived in the mouth and causes the release of insulin in preparation for the expected sugar.
When the insulin is repeatedly released but finds no sugar, it causes insulin resistance = Type 2 diabetes.
There is evidence though I no longer have the refs, proving that the companies produing the artificial sweeteners KNEW this but withheld the evidence from the approval process, before they ever sold it.

Re: The Guardian - Artificial sweeteners may promote diabetes
Sounds iffy research, maybe true for some, less or not true for inherited insulin resistance.
I routinely have blood insulin levels measured.
Being strict on Atkins, no/low carb in ketosis, using sugar substitutes, my insulin level dropped from 22 to 8 this past summer.
Thus, I disproved that theory is an absolute truth.

I have been a big believer in "natural" since I was 5 years old, without any help from my family. But I still wonder if stevia is going to be a problem. Refined stevia is highly processed. I know that stevia is sort of natural, unlike those chemical sweeteners. I would love any thoughts from any of you. I have gone hardcore low carbs, but I still have some diabetes symptoms.

stevia is an herb. kind a looks like basil a little. it is a green leaf. if your stevia is not green it is no longer a green leaf herb but a processed artificial sweetener. grow your own. dehydrate it and grind up the leaf. that is stevia
