If you want to learn the remedies you first need to learn about how the entire spectrum of homeopathy was developed and applied. Get a good foundation of knowledge from the masters.

The remedies are part, the repertory is part, the patient is paramount. There is the whole spectrum of miasms and how dis-ease is manifested in the organism.

If you are serious about self educating go to http://www.homeoint.org/english/ and begin by reading the material written by the masters. Read and study the Organon 6th Edition.

You owe yourself and anyone you treat to have a working knowledge of the Organon.

Hahnemann and the masters were well educated physicians. You CAN learn to be a good classical homeopath on your own. You will have to begin at the beginning. Read and read and read. There are many of the old books available on the internet for free through Google books.

I wish those e-books had been available when I was a student and I wouldn't have several walls filled with sagging shelves of homeopathy books. One thing a good homeopath has is lots and lots of books.

Learn the polycrest remedies and learn those 30-40 remedies by rote. Learn how to reporitize by hand. You can use a computer program but nothing makes you focus on the patient first and then the remedy than sorting out the symptoms by doing the reporitization on a piece of paper.
Learn how to form a rubric, how to use the "three legged stool" for remedy selection. What are the SRP's (the strange, rare, and peculiar symptoms) that lead you to the remedy.

It all sounds difficult but once you begin at the beginning the knowledge will flow into you and light a fire to learn more and more. You CAN do this.

I absolutely agree with Dr. Stuart,

Homeopathy is very complex. If a person is having rheumatic problems and if their treatment is not on a deep enough level those problems can go deeper into the cardiac region of the body.
You need to understand symptom totality, the whole philosophy of homeopathy and the way to view chronic diseases.

What country are you in? Most countries have minimum standards of education to practice (and if they do not have them, they should).

One thing I can guarantee with homeopathy you will never be bored again.

I'm thinking that a much broader picture of how this all works would benefit you. You might want to read anything and everything at www.simillimum.com . Also study the Materia Medica of various authors, perhaps starting with John Henry Clarke. And of course you need to read Hahnemann's Organon, in the sixth edition. Much of this is available online, or in print, used or new. The answers to your questions are not always simple, and as always with homeopathy will depend on the rest of the case at hand. It's not easy, but it's certainly fascinating. This is one of those arts where most of what you learn is that you have more to learn.

Start at the beginning. Read Hahnemann's Organon 6th edition daily and learn the aphorisms like you would learn Bible verses. If there is ever a question about another homeopath's writings go back to Hahnemann for advice.

Learn the polycrest remedies first. There are about 30 of them.

Don't read everything at once. Look up the study curriculum at the British School of Homeopathy. http://www.bihint.com/course/intro/

You need to learn in layers. You build one layer of learning upon the next layer of learning. There is just too much information to learn it all willy nilly. You need a study plan. Don't get overwhelmed. Take small bites and always go back to Hahnemann.

All remedies start to look the same when you are new to this (and even later).
You have to be able to write your symptoms down, put them in repertory language called rubrics, and then repertorize them by looking them up in the repertory, charting them and then reading the remedies that are most represented.
