Sisyphus The Osmium theme is represented by the legend of Sisyphus. He condemned to push a huge boulder up a hill. He set about his task with all his power, it was an enormous struggle but eventually he managed to get the boulder in motion and to roll it slowly to the top of the hill. When he was nearly there and he already thought he had made it the treacherous rock escaped his grip and bounced down the hill again. So the poor condemned man had to start all over again. And when he had nearly reached the top once more he lost the rock again (Schwab).
Here we see the immenseness of the task and the sheer impossible strength that is needed to complete it. This is typical of Stage 8. We also see that Sisyphus is on his way to the top but cannot reach it. An interesting aspect of this story is that Sisyphus was the founder of Corinth, a typical city state [Gold series].
