Dogs with heartworm

Here are some questions for doggy lovers and doggy know-it-alls (meant in the nicest possible way).

Have you had experience in treating dogs with heartworm and what was the outcome?

I'm not suggesting it but do you have any knowledge of what happens when a dog is given the heartworm nosode for active heartworm?

There is a lack of consensus on the heartworm nosode; some say it works, others report no benefits. That said, the most successful approaches seem to be those that support the animal constitutionally, and just wait out the worms' lifecycle, once adults are present. As with all parasites, they are themselves a sign of disruption with the life force, and the best defense seems to be to nurture health until the body can deal with the worms. I only know personally of a few cases, but all have lived and are now worm-free, with constitutional treatment.

Things to consider are what happens when the heartworm dies.
If it gets stuck in a blood vessel there is a serious issue, especially in SMALL dogs and cats, where it may clog the heart.

If it was my animal, I'd go very slowly on dosing, with the idea of building resistance to NEW worms rather than hoping for sudden death of a potentially large load.

I'm not sure I would use the nosode, but would study it. I would go with the constitutional remedy for sure, and consider an intercurrent of the nosode, perhaps. But then, you might not have been asking me:)

The test discovers microfilaria - the "baby" stage of their lives. What causes symptoms you can see are the adults having taken up residence in the heart. Many dogs can harbor adults in small numbers, but a large infestation causes weakness, lassitude and shortness of breath, and it's then that rate at which the worms die off can be the main issue.

Many folks who do not use preventives test every six months for microfilaria.
