Dale,
I've been taking CVS store brand Algal DHA 300mg from algae not fish sourced. 1-3 softgels per day for a year.
It shows on box clinically proven memory improvement at 3 sotfgels per day, 1 is for heart health.
Definitely feel it has helped me as my diabetic higher blood sugars have lead to slower thinking as my blood is thicker.
CVS runs 2 for 1 sale on their and other vitamin brands weekly so I buy the 90 size for $32 and get one free but you can try smaller bottle
http://www.cvs.com/shop/product-detail/ ... ductTabs-5
This algae based DHA is available elsewhere but not at 2 for 1 pricing.
I also feel greatly helped by Ginkgo Biloba.
First I used 120 mg/day tablets which was too much for me as I don't tolerate too much herbal at once.
Now I use 30mg caplets from Rexall/Sundown available at most drug chains. Average dose is 60mg but 30mg seems enough for me.
Definitely improves thinking, more with it feeling, less forgetful, it helps increase brain blood flow, also researched for Alzheimers and general memory improvement, also may be good for inflammation from somewhere I read.
http://www.iherb.com/Rexall-Sundown-Nat ... lets/41103
Available at most drug chains at 2 for 1 pricing every so often. I like this Plus form has standardized ginkgo components.
Due to your mother's age, I would start with low doses, one of each, maybe cut the ginkgo 30mg in half and see if you notice a difference.

Memory Improvement WAS minerals again
Re: Memory Improvement WAS minerals again
Thanks for this input, Susan.
I've not seen much so far from the items I've added to her diet, but then it's hard to adhere to their schedule, which involves dosing at 4 different times of the day. Gingko is something I've had her on for a couple of years -- if she remembers to take it. My main effort goes into ensuring she's eating properly. Elderly women tend to subsist on oj, English muffins and coffee or tea. Hardly a balanced diet.
I believe she has vascular dementia, so the effects of any supplements are marginal at best. Whether they are worth the cost and effort is hard to say at this point. She has no other health issues and is not on any medication.
I'm glad those supplements are working for you.
Peace,
Dale

Wonder about Cratageus in x potency or tincture. I have a picture of it clearing vessels of plaque. Has any one any comments, Jean

Crataegus definitely clears plaque, but it takes a long time AND you need to correct the nutrition.
There is a flood of information coming up about coconut oil and other nut oils, especially walnuts, useful in the treatment of many forms of dementia, including Alzheimer.
The postulate is that some of those dementias are caused by an inability of the nervous cells to properly use glucose as fuel, therefore simply "starving". The oils, and especially coconut oil, are extremely rich in MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) that can be used directly as food by the neurons. Some papers (case reports, not series) have described an immediate response and behavioural change after one single teaspoon; others do recommend 4 teaspoons of coconut oil/day for the treatment of Alzheimer with cases described but not (yet?) formal studies that I have seen.
Another approach is the "defect in waste disposal": it is known that the brain does not have a lymphatic system, anatomically; it appears now that this function is done by the glial cells, giving rise to the term "glymphatic system" and a proper scientific article has been published, just google it. Improving it seems to help a lot and is now understood as being one of the mechanisms by which cranio-sacral therapy works: increasing and optimising the cerebro-spinal fluid circulation = better drainage, garbage removal, better function.
I have started combining those notions with improving vascularisation in some patients; talk to me in 6-12 months for results....
Joe.

Thanks, Jean & Dr. Joe. Her nutrition is fine now because she lives with us and my husband and I do all the cooking: organic foods, main meal at middday, heavy on the veggies and fruit and nuts. Coconut oil is sometimes used in cooking, but it's hard to incorporate into her diet. (Although if I made some of my daughter-in-law's raw chocolate truffles, Mom would no doubt get her daily quota of coconut oil!).
I've been thinking of getting Nutiva hemp oil -- any studies on or experience with that?
She would also benefit from increased exercise, but that's almost impossible to achieve with her balance and lack of strength. I think we're just watching a clock slowly winding down, and I'm not sure how much can be done to affect the process.
Peace,
Dale

there are many exercises that can be done sitting down. arm exercises by the bushel.
leg lifts, ankle rotations, knee presses, etc. perhaps you should have a consult with a
physical therapist for some customized exercises for her.

Getting old is quite awful really. I think Dale the fact that you are trying and care is magnificent and that is probably all she wants apart from retiring gradually from this world as gracefully as possible.. You must look after your own health and quality of life, Jean

Thank you for those kind words, Jean. I was signed up to take a caregivers' course, but the course was cancelled: everyone was too busy taking care of one or both parents to attend.
Looking after oneself requires a bit of detachment. I'm sure, for example, that exercises would benefit her, but she can't remember to do them unless I remind her (and help) or my husband or I transport her somewhere for supervised sessions. We can only do so much of either before other things suffer, like our farm, our relationship, and my practice.
Peace,
Dale
