GE for flu

Post by Ginny Wilken »

Is anyone hearing anything about a Genus Epidemicus for the current respiratory flu? It was a real Hydra to fight through, with fevers and chills recurring each evening, swollen and painful glands in the throat, eyes glued shut with mucus each night, no appetite, lassitude, some incarcerated intestinal gas, and dry, harsh coughing fits. The symptoms did not proceed in the usual order, but kept taking turns popping up.

I countered with well-chosen remedies for the acutes; some worked well, others not so much. All is gone now but the coughing. I have not become ill in a decade, but since I have begun working on my case again with a constitutional remedy, I may have shaken up my life force a bit and become an "appropriate" locus for this challenge.

Just wondered what others have found.

No one I know can find a GE – not even the UK Homeopathic Helpline which deals with lots of calls a day. I personally have given Gels, Puls, Bryonia and Baptisa. I have also found that I have had to change remedies as they have worked and then stopped. The 2 books I use for flu are Pointers to the common Remedies – M Tyler and a little pamphlet Influenza – Douglas Borland. The former gives tips on how to deal with the aftermath of flu like reoccurring symptoms.
Try Drosera for the coughing as that’s another I have used- if it is a Drosera type cough of course!!

Yep, that's how it went, Rochelle! I used, once or more, or repeatedly on separate occasions: Bell, Bry, Gels, Euph, Nux V, Allium C, Hepar S, and, yes, Drosera, which worked until it didn't. Thank you for the pointers; I shall search them out.

Pertussin worked with one child after Drosera stopped so look at that one.

Neither of you has mentioned the remedy I came up with, which is LYC...based on GInny's description:

It has the fever/chills periodicity, gas indigestion, changeability of symptoms, gland pain, sluggish body and type of cough suggested (esp so if rough cough occurs at night) . Rubrics I considered (all present in Lyc):
EYE - AGGLUTINATED - night
FACE - PAIN - Submaxillary glands
FACE - SWELLING - Submaxillary glands
STOMACH - APPETITE - wanting
STOMACH - FLATUS; FROM OBSTRUCTED
ABDOMEN - FLATULENCE - obstructed
RESPIRATION - DIFFICULT - flatulence; from
COUGH - DRY
COUGH - PAROXYSMAL
COUGH - PERIODICAL
COUGH - PERSISTENT
FEVER - ALTERNATING with - chills
FEVER - PERIODICAL - day - every
GENERALS - ALTERNATING states
GENERALS - LASSITUDE
GENERALS - SLUGGISHNESS of the body
GENERALS - MUCOUS SECRETIONS - altered
GENERALS - COMPLAINTS - wandering
GENERALS - INFLUENZA
Apparently there is quite an epidemic in this city, though so far I do not know anyone with it.
So I have not tried LYC, I am suggesting it purely on what was described here as symptoms.

I always feel MIND symptoms also matter, and none are included. Lyc however does run the gamut from hypochodriacal to bravado, aversion to everything to wanting to be held, alternating sadness and cheerfulness......with changeability built in.

Other options on same basis:
Nux-v though intestinal gas usually has other causes in Nux, and it lacks the throat glandular pain.
Bell though its gas is more from food than illness and it lacks periodical coughing.

Namaste,
Irene

Oh, yeah, Irene, that was it! Wish I had seen that rep a few days ago. I don't tend to think of such a huge remedy for an acute, but it explains a lot of what happened that I didn't list, too. Thank you for the lesson!

Hope it also works in practice:-)
I reckon I'll take a few doses of Lyc preventively.
I'm totally democratic on that - no prejudice for or against any remedy for any situation. I just used *your* list of symptoms. So you did the first half anyway.
Usually that's a good sign for a match....
My pleasure.
Namaste,
Irene

Hi Ginny (we met a few months ago in Monroe at the show)

This is only the second time I've posted here, but thought I would add my recent experience. I've had our family taking Oscillococinum
once a week as a prophylactic the past few months (1 pill only in water), but I did get the flu last week anyway. I continued to take small doses (one pill per 4 oz water and sip)occasionally over the next two days. I first felt sick Friday night, sat was the worst, Sunday all was gone except a cough and need to blow nose, Monday night I coughed throughout the night and that was it. I had all of the symptoms you had but for only short periods and not severe. The worst was the body aches and chill on sat. We were traveling and when I came home and heard that the flu was around I assumed that was what I had. We're going to keep up the prophylactic doses. I didn't even bother with any other remedies. It was like I had a quick obligatory run through of symptoms and that was it. I'm very thankful!
