Subject: [Hom-Media] Media code for homeopaths
Dear All,

As indicated below, a number of major stakeholders within the homeopathy profession met on 20 January to agree a media code. The Homeopathy Action Trust (HAT) has acted as coordinator, and will continue to build on the work it first initiated in October 2010.

Please take the time to read the following recommendations, and also circulate this to your colleagues. The anti homeopathy brigade are scheduled to run an international over dose session on 06 February, though there now seems to be some question as to whether this is going to happen. Another very good reason for ignoring their antics, and letting them go and play by themselves!

Dear homeopath,

Following the Homeopathy Action Trust’s "One Vision One Voice" conference, a media group was established with representation from all the major homeopathic organisations, both in the UK and Internationally.

This group has now devised a media code for homeopaths, which is attached below.

We will be coming back to you, the profession, for your input and expertise in the near future.

Thank you,

The Homeopathy Action Trust.

Media code for homeopaths – February 2011

In the face of increasing media attention, the profession urgently needs to ensure media appearances by homeopaths are clear, concise and on message.

Following a meeting where all the professional organisations were represented, (including the Faculty and the BHVA,) the Homeopathy Action Trust (HAT) has facilitated the development of a media code. In the interests of our profession, all homeopaths are asked to comply with this code.

HAT is supporting the development of a strategy comprising a professional press campaign of positive information about homeopathy, and a coordinated and consistent approach to negative press, which will involve trained media spokespeople representing homeopathy effectively.

By being a lone voice, speaking inadvisably, you might risk damaging your profession. We therefore ask you to support the following code:

Homeopathy is a safe and effective form of medicine; it can be used safely alongside conventional treatments

Homeopathy alleviates symptoms and improves the general health of the patient·

When reporting cases that responded to homeopathy, avoid making any claims for cure or prevention of specific diseases·

There are no homeopathic vaccinations as alternatives to conventional immunizations (avoid being drawn into public debate about homeopathic prophylactics, but where appropriate refer to historical examples or ground-breaking research such as the recent Cuban study on Leptospirosis)·

Homeopaths support other health professionals and discuss care strategies with them, whilst avoiding unilateral changes to patients’ medical management·

Please refer ALL media requests to your professional body, where they will be addressed by trained media spokespeople·

Please do not engage with the sceptics and denialists in the media, on social networking sites, or in person. All attention energizes their misinformed rhetoric.·

Really very timid and sells homeopathy short.
We need to be a stand alone protocol, not one dependent and subservient to the medical industry.
Lyss comes to mind for this profession!!!!!

Do you feel we have the numbers, the internal cohesiveness, and the public support to do that at this time? For present purposes, I assume this would have to be asked specifically with regard to strictly classical prescribers--or do you have a different thought in mind about that?

Prevailing as a "stand alone protocol", without subservience to the medical industry, is being managed by any other group; do you feel we have better ability to succeed at it than they do, and if so, what makes you feel so?

I don't think it matters. The field of homeopathy is filled with people who 'just want to be nice,' and
to protect their little turf (practice). Too many think they only have to be positive in their attitude, thank
the goddess, and mind their own business and we will all survive. Wh

Well, and you have been saying for ages, that "positive attitude" and minding one's own turf will not help us survive! I heartily agree. That's why I think that it IS important to assess--critically and just as objectively as we can--whether we *do* have the necessary resources to be able to "go it alone". And if we do not, what will it take so that we can *survive* now, to be able to perhaps "to it alone" later, in more forgiving times and circumstances.

Do you really mean what you've said in your initial answer? I asked, in essence, do we have the resources to survive as a "stand alone" modality under current (political, economic, societal, and etc.) conditions. Is that the question to which you've answered "I don't think it matters"? What actions should follow, in your opinion, given the current climate?

What do you feel we ought to be doing, that could enhance our ability to stay in practice, and have patients to treat, under current circumstances?

The best way to 'go it alone' is to get homeopathy back into the hands of families and individuals.

It really is a people medicine that can be used by everyday people and families. (Not that it is going to happen anytime soon but I woould love to see it taught in schools as a necessary life skill)

If its use becomes restricted to the professional homeopath then we have lost the battle.

The only way homeopathy will survive is for it to have strong grass roots support and use. this is the only thing that will protect it - people power.

And it will have the opposite effect than expected at the professional level. It won't remove work but increase it.

I agree. One of the most rewarding things is to teach Mums the key notes of the basic remedies . It is an empowering system in these times where disempowerment is the norm, Jean

I quite agree. (I would add that part of having it *fully* in "the hands of families and individuals" is for the understanding to include familiarity with the differences between treating acutes and injuries, versus chronic care, which generally should have professional care.)

I can agree that this needs to be part of the 'campaign.' I have always supported the lay practitioner.
Historically, the barefoot doctor covered all the villages and the Chinese and Cuban revolutions
institutionalized these people and their practice.
As for schooling, here in the US, school children are taught all kinds of information about health care
and how to take care of themselves/families. Why shouldn't homeopathic care be part of their education
including first aid protocols.

That would necessitate a mutual attitude of respectful coexistence with "mainstream" care. I wonder if that's achievable in this climate? On a broad scale, I mean; I'm certain it is achievable, and no doubt being done, here and there on a small scale.
