hashimoto's syndrome

Hi,

I have a patient coming in with the beginning of Hashimoto's syndrome. I would just give her a constitutional remedy, but the description sounds like mood swings which are so difficult to treat. Which swing in the condition do you treat? High or the low? Both? I am dreading this before it begins.

Hashimoto's Syndrome is essentially autoimmune thyroiditis. When you get the thyroid regulated the mood swings will level out. You don't treat the high's and low's, you treat the physical abnormality first. Get a copy of her blood work and check her TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and the T-3, T-4. This will give you an idea of which remedy to select depending on her thyroid levels. Check the literature for thyroid remedies and the similimum.

Interestingly enough last week we were discussing thyroid problems and a medic colleague advised to start with thyroidium first for one week (30 c Daily) and then the indicated homeopathic remedy.

(I appreciate that this may not be Hahnemannian homeopathy!)

Thanks for the feed back.

You are both saying you treat the disease not the patient in this case. Or at least, the disease is the biggest factor in deciding the remedy.

I can't imagine how you would use the T3 or T4 levels to choose a remedy. I could see them as indicators of effect.

Dr. Bernat, are you suggesting that the thyroid settles down and then it is easier to use a constitutional? Sort of like some treatments of cancer. You use one remedy for the cancer and another for the constitution. You use them together or alternate?

I have never done this sort of treatment, so I am poking holes in the dark.

Another way to treat Pxs with thyroid problems is to give the constitutional and have the Px take Thyroidinum in a very low potency daily. I've one hypothyroid Px who even managed very well during pregnancy without ever having to resort to hormone treatment.
Another helpful support for the thyroid is Standard Process's Thytopin.
