How would that translate into a rubric...? Weakness of eye muscles? Unable to
cross her eyes. Doctor gave her exercises to strengthen the eyes.

she said she couldn't cross her eyes
Strabismus is crossed eyes

who needs to be able to cross their eyes? I don't think I can. It hurts to think of trying

Strabismus. Collins dictionary states "abnormal parallel alignment of one or both eyes, characterised by turning inwards or outwards from nose, also called squint" It may be different repertories define it more. I gathered maybe wrongly that there was some such deviation as exercises were advised. Best Wishes,

Presumably the meaning in saying "unable to cross her eyes" is not that she can't look at the tip of her nose :-) but that she can't *converge* her eyes sufficiently well to merge images for near vision.

is it the issue of convergence, as opposed to crossing them?
that would result in a problem of adjusting btw near/far vision.
it is a problem.
i understood strabismus to be a lazy eye that resulted in one eye
compensating for the other.
eye exercises can be very useful. there is a specific system of
exercises that have been around since the 1930's i think. it used
to be call the morton system i believe and was used by aldous
huxley to regain his sight. this is old info that i am pulling out of my
brain. hopefully i got the names correct.

Thanks shannon. Yes, its a convergence problem. If she is looking at a the
point of a pencil and you bring the pencil closer and closer to her
eyes...both her eyes seem to move away from the point..as if she is looking to
the left of the point. Most people, by the time the tip got within a few
inches of one's nose, their eyes would cross...go inward..to focus on the
point. Are those huxley exercises with the glasses with the little holes in
them? I have a pair of those in a box packed away somewhere.

Crossing your eyes is actually quite good for them - exercises the muscles, as in the Bates method.
