US-urgent action alert
This came today from the (US) National Center for Homeopathy.
I'm not able to open the link (between the green bars), but there's background and presumably a path to it at
This seems important to speak up on! Note at the NCCAM page they write: " ... Mission is closely connected to priority setting, which in turn hinges on impact, which leads to the questions of who knows, who cares, and who is listening ..." We have to let them know that *lots* of us know, care, and are listening!!

Dear NCH members,
You have an opportunity until November 19, 2009 to participate in what may be the most important decision for homeopathy and the integrative practice community in the next decade.
It will certainly be your one chance to participate in a $600-million question, namely:
How should NCCAM prioritize its spending for the years 2011-2015?
NCCAM (National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine - a division of the National Institutes of Health) is the primary source of government research funds for this field.
Let NCCAM know the kinds of research you think NCCAM should fund today. And tell your friends to comment as well. This one is VERY important.
We need to be heard! If you would like to support this objective, please post your comments before Thursday, November 19 at
NCCAM Strategic Plan: 2010 [NCCAM Health Information .

Re: US-urgent action alert
I got the same alert. I do not have a clue what I am actually supposed to do about it. I did follow the link (which is not in the newsletter below but was on my e-newsletter) but the NCCAM “papers” are way over my head. Does any one else know how to be helpful in this situation? Teresa (Northern VA)

Re: US-urgent action alert
i have no problem opening the link sent. there were 3 categories including a document called framework and other
considerations. i read that, out of interest, and at the bottom is a link for sending comments.
The question is what do we want to ask them to do?
Personally I don't trust them to do research on homeopathy. However, it seems reasonable to ask that they do
cost effective studies from Britain and India as 2 countries with long and broad histories of use of homeopathy.
It also seems reasonable to ask that they review the clinical information on the breadth of use and success of
homeopathy.
And third, they might do a counter study to that obnoxious mega analysis published by the Lance several years
ago, taking into consideration the major criticisms of that Lancet non-study.
What do others think? It seems that we should come to some kind of collective community approach so our
individual voices have some power behind them.

Re: US-urgent action alert
i got this alert a few weeks ago. there were 2 NCCAM papers and we were asked to comment on both of them, urging inclusion of homeopathy. i just scanned them very briefly; to me, only one of the papers seemed to invite that kind of comment, so i did what i was asked and placed a comment on that paper. whole thing took me about 3 min.

Re: US-urgent action alert
You suggestions sound good to me, Tanya, even aside from questions of whether they'd conduct reliable studies. (Which personally I don't doubt, but I don't know much about it--but if i remember right, there some of "us", homeopaths, were involved in its start-up, weren't there?) But review and reassessment of what's *already* been done, and historical record etc., seems both cost-effective and useful, rather than continuing to bat the "take THIS study" ball back and forth?
But I also think that *all* responses of a reasonably favorable nature will be useful (even if some say "do homeopathy studies!" and others say "don't do studies, but do historical reviews!"), because part of what they're after is to hear *what* people are interested in (e.g. homeopathy) and how many people care!

Re: US-urgent action alert
with all due respect for NCH they don't seem to keep the interest of lay homeopath in the center of their concern. not many things can be more detremental for the states with health freedom act as making homepathy available through the mainstream heathcare providers. general public does not differentiate b/w someone who has spent years to learn it and a doctor who attended a weekend seminar. as long as doctors are getting on the quack watch for using homeopathy in their practice everyone is better off.

Re: US-urgent action alert
I personally question the energy behind NCCAM, it often feels like a big machine/front to me. Would those possible projects indeed happen, and actually help homeopathy or be diluted/distorted, I'm not sure.

That is exactly why I raised the question and did not suggest studies on remedies or new disease testing.
I do not trust them to do any decent new research. But if they did anything that would benefit us, I think it might
be in the areas of real review of successful work already done.

Re: US-urgent action alert
Hi Shannon and Teresa,
If you read all of the papers NCCAM presented( boring ) the important portions are:
a request for the the community to assist NCCAM in shaping the research portfolio.
The 4 factors(scientific promise, extent and nature of practice and use, amenability to rigorous scientific investigation, and a potential to change health or health care practices )i identified as key components of a framework for research priorities.
The type and sources of information that must be included in an optimal priority setting process.
Comment on;
the major unmet needs of consumers and the general public in accessing, interpreting and making use of research evidence about CAM.
the major unmet needs of health care providers in accessing , interpreting and making use of research evidence about CAM.
research needed to better understand how both health care providers and the general public make decisions about CAM practice and use.
Of course this could have been asked for a week or more ago, rather then today with a deadline of tomorrow!
NCCAM was established to give grants, conduct and support research, dissemination of information, identifying, investigating and validating CAM. It is independent of NIH. I believe homeopathy has gotten a couple of grants for research over the years, but we apparently don't apply for many grants on the whole. It is hard to get a grant for something that doesn't lend itself to "traditional" research parameters and lots of practitioners are busy with their practices to research.
Hope this helped clarify the request.
Sue

If you read all of the papers NCCAM presented( boring ) the important portions are:
a request for the the community to assist NCCAM in shaping the research portfolio.
The 4 factors(scientific promise, extent and nature of practice and use, amenability to rigorous scientific investigation, and a potential to change health or health care practices )i identified as key components of a framework for research priorities.
The type and sources of information that must be included in an optimal priority setting process.
Comment on;
the major unmet needs of consumers and the general public in accessing, interpreting and making use of research evidence about CAM.
the major unmet needs of health care providers in accessing , interpreting and making use of research evidence about CAM.
research needed to better understand how both health care providers and the general public make decisions about CAM practice and use.
Sue

URGENT ACTION ALERT!!!
ADVOCATING HOMEOPATHY for MAINSTREAM HEALTHCARE
Sincerely,
Nancy Gahles, DC, CCH, RSHom(NA)
