speaking of Burnett...

...i have a Q, not directly homeopathic, about Burnett. i read somewhere that he had 9, or maybe it was 12, children and that every one of them committed suicide. this i found stunning and hard to believe, and also there's something really fishy going on there if it's true. i've mentioned it to people over the years but nobody had ever read anything similar so i still have no satisfaction. is it possible anyone on this list has more of the story? i apologize if the personal lives of great homeopaths is not really very germane to our list's function....

I remember reading that he had a lot of children, but none of them actually had any children of their own. I don't remember reading anything about so many suicides. I'm pretty sure what I read was in one of his many small books. I do remember being really surprised that he didn't have any grandchildren - from his writings I would have imagined that he would be a good grandfather. I guess being a homoeopath doesn't ensure we and our children get to have charmed lives....
OK, I just googled it - it's in a preface to the Best of Burnett - 2 marriages, first wife died, 6 children from the first, 7 from the second. One died young, one died in the First World War, 3 committed suicide, 2 sons had brief childless marriages, 8 daughters never married, 1 daughter was a novelist and received the title Dame.
Born in 1840. First married in 1874 to Agnes who died at the birth of the 6th child in 1882 - 6 kids in 8 years..... very busy times....and these would have been his early years practising as a homoeopath - he became a homoeopath some time after 1872 while working in Glasgow. You really don't know how much of what he knew in later years came from hard work and tragedy in these early years.

He married Kathryn (the love of his life) a year after Agnes died. He settled his family in the country in Hove and had lodgings himself in London near his practice, only returning home twice a week. He died himself in 1901 at 60 years of age - so quite a few of his children may have been still quite young at that point - the eldest would only have been 25.
Apparently there may be more written about his life by Spurling and also Clarke.
