John Stossel's blog on homeopathy...

Post by Dana Ullman, MPH »

Dear Friends of Homeopathy,

Many people may remember that the ABC-TV program, 20/20, did a segment of homeopathic medicine with John Stossel as its reporter. Stossel has previously attacked organic foods and pretended to do a "study" on organics and asserted that there was no difference between organic and non-organic food. However, he "forgot" to do the study, and ALL of his data was fabricated.

His segment on homeopathy was similarly fraudulent. He and his producer sought to replicate the work of Professor M. Ennis, but they hired a flunky lab tech who made up his own experiment. Even though Stossel's producer KNEW that this study has serious problems, he pretended that it was a "valid scientific study." This "junk science" created "JUNK JOURNALISM."

Just a couple of days ago, Stossel's blog focuses on homeopathy...with a reference to a very funny (but anti-homeopathy) homeopathy video. I wrote him a response that reminded him as his "junk science" and "junk journalism" segment on homeopathy. He/they chose to not post my contribution. Today, I tried to re-post a toned-down reply, but they won't let me post anything (no surprise).

Perhaps someone else would like to post it at Stossel's blog:

John...I too thought that the video was hilarious. We homeopaths can laugh at ourselves too.

You are usually an excellent tv journalist, but like everyone, you too make mistakes...and sometimes big ones. For instance, the show you did on homeopathy several years ago is an example of "junk journalism" and "junk science."

For details, see my short review of what you did right and what you did wrong on that reporting:

It is a tad ironic that you sharply critique "junk science," and yet, you, your producers (Mark Golden), and 20/20 conducted a "junk science" experiment. I was pleased that you and 20/20 were smart enough to never re-broadcast that ill-informed and mis-informed segment, but still, you need to apologize for this mistake and do something to correct it.
Clearly, it seems that Stossel has dish it, but he cannot take it. What a wimp...

I couldn't find your original post but why bother to tone it down - you have to give it to them straight and heavy sometimes :-)
