Shannon,
It's possible that what you took for a bull's-eye rash was simply a localized reaction to an insect bite, not necessarily a tick bite. A true bull's-eye rash will not only spread out from the bitten area but will pop up in unbitten areas as well, if left untreated. (The first time this happened to me, I looked as if I'd been tie-dyed!)

Thanks Dale, that's a reassuring perspective!
In that case, my having put the pitch stuff onto the rash would not
have been likely to stop it popping up elsewhere, would it?
Does a numb, white spot in the middle ring any bells for you?
